As Friend of the Pack, Aria Naveed should be untouchable, protected by the most influential group in the Pacific Northwest. But someone is unleashing rogue vampires to hunt her down, and she is determined to find out why.

When Aria gains command of Sanborn Place and takes on a case involving a mysterious paranormal, her life is put in more peril than ever as she finds herself bound to an influential power player. She doesnโ€™t want to be anyoneโ€™s puppet, but must tread carefully as she traverses the streets of Spokane, WA, or risk being overwhelmed by the forces moving against her.

As the only known pyrokinetic in the area, Aria is in high demand, but not for her services. It seems that to those in power, sheโ€™s worth more dead than alive, and if a mysterious enemy has their way, she wonโ€™t live long enough to find out why.

I read Kissed by Fire in just two days! That’s pretty quick for me in general, but when you consider my current reading habits with the new job, that’s extraordinary! I just had such a good time with every minute of Kissed by Fire and I can’t wait for more of this fun world and characters that Danielle Annett has built.

I think my favorite part of this series is the main character, Aria. She has so much freaking potential – I mean she basically spontaneously combusts! But she doesn’t have the BEST control of that ability yet. There’s nothing I love more in my Urban Fantasy than a character that with SOMEDAY be incredibly kick ass, but is still a little bit hampered by their own weaknesses. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Aria already has plenty of reasons to be called kick ass. The control she does have over her ability is dangerous and she’s trained enough to be a threat without it. But MAN!! When she gets control of her abilities…. just watch out, it’s going to be scary as hell!

But there’s more to her than her abilities – she’s got a complicated past and when we enter Kissed by Fire, Aria is facing that past in unexpected, painful ways. Her grief and resulting foolheardy mistakes were well-written. And the consequences of one her mistakes were… WHOA! I’m so excited for where that particularly story thread is going to go. Vague enough? Well you’ll have to read it to figure out what I’m talking about, I’m not into spoilers ๐Ÿ˜‰

I also really enjoy this world, broken by the Awkenening – when humans became aware of paranormals and stupidly tried to defeat them. Humans continue to be dumb (suprised? me either!) and one of the central themes of the series is the scheming that Aria is working to uncover involving Shifters, Vampires, and Humans. People like Aria – a pscyh – are considered human because of their genetic “sameness” but Aria doesn’t see things so black and white. She’s best friends with a pack member, and as Kissed by Fire begins Aria has basically moved in with the pack. Needless to say, a plan to restore human supremacy doesn’t sit right with Aria, not at the expense of lives. So seeing her work to take that plot apart has been fun.

My one complaint with Kissed by Fire would be that a lot of the biggest, plot changing moments felt stumbled upon. Aria is doing a lot, but she’s not really accomplishing much because of her efforts. In a lot of ways she’s good a stumbling into the right path and at other times, is pushed like a pawn into paths (which may or may not be the right path). Despite that lack, I enjoy her blundering successes and I’m nervous about the moments I think she’s been a pawn that she may not even realize yet – so it’s mostly working for me!

Depsite being called Kissed by Fire, don’t be fooled into thinking this is going to have a lot of romance. It doesn’t. But it’s Urban Fantasy, so I”m not really looking for it. But there are romantic threads and a couple kisses – so I have a feeling future books will see a bit more romantic steam too!

So much still hangs unanswered as Kissed by Fire ended and I just can’t wait to see what happens next!

ABOUT BOOK 1 in the series

Released: Jan 28, 2015
See my review

It has been six years since the Awakening and peace in Spokane, Washington is still tenuous at best. The vampires and shifters are all vying for control of the city and the humans seem to be the ones suffering the consequences, or so it seems.

Aria Naveed has spent the last two years of her life fighting to make the many wrongs of the world right, but soon finds out that the humans arenโ€™t as weak as they appear and may be a more terrifying foe than any of the other races combined.

When a stranger rolls into town with trouble on his heels, Aria finds herself trapped in the middle of a battle that could cost her more than she has bargained for as a fight for justice turns into an unexpected fight for her life.

I have the first book in this series on my to-read list, I think I added it after reading your review of book 1. It sounds like the second book is even better. Aria sounds like a great main character and I love those main characters who are kickass, but still have weaknesses as well, makes them more realistic in my opinion. The story and world both sound very interesting!

Man! I will have to make sure to pick up this series, Berls. Two days?? With all you have going on, that is something. But I have a feeling this kickass heroine is what kept you glued to your kindle. Am I right? I love a heroine who is feisty and can pull out a can of whupass when needed but also has loads of potential. Aria sounds like that kind of girl. I know this series was already on my tbr because of your review of book 1 but it’ll move up in priority now. ๐Ÿ™‚
