Pinching Pennies

You may have seen similar posts by other bloggers, such as Feclia @ The Geeky Blogger’s Book Blog‘s Balancing the Book Budget or Jennifer @ The Book Nympho‘s Book Budget. I thought it was a great idea so Pinching Pennies is my version of being trying to be responsible when purchasing books. And a big thanks to Michelle @ Because Reading is better than real life for designing my button!

It’s a new year and I have a new – STRICTER – budget goal than last year. I’m pretty sure I did great this month too… let’s see how I did!

I need to stop grabbing books! That’s 14 books this month, though 3 of them were library books, thank goodness. With the exception of grabbing Winner’s Curse and the latest Chicagoland Vampires, I’m going to make April a no book buying month. I have RT in May and I need to save room on my shelves for that!

  • Giftcard Money available at end of month: $15 Half Price Books + $135 Barnes & Noble + $20 Audible

Thanks Julie! It’s working out much better for me than last year – I think I might actually manage to not spend any of my money. Fingers crossed!

You really are doing well, Berls. And I’m in the same boat as you…I need to stop grabbing books! I’ll try not to pick up too many this month – that reminder about RT made me stop and think. Oh my! I should count how many of the 93 (or so) I’ve read that I brought home from RT 2013! *ha* Keep up the consistency, girlie! Well, with the exception of grabbing books! πŸ˜‰

LOL guess what I did last night? Used my gift card money on Amazon and coupon balance on audible to buy books! In my defense (to myself) they’re for book club and I couldn’t get them at the library! I’m so good at coming up with excuses;)

    • Berls

I feel like having a book budget is a lot a like a food journal – it may not keep me under calories/budget all the time, but it lessens how far over I go because it keeps me aware. Not to mention that Ib love food and books LOL

Whew goodness! That’s a great way to earn your book spending money. I am way too lazy to keep a track like that. lol I’m pretty good though at keeping my spending under control and using just gift cards I earn from wherever.

For the giveaways. Have you thought of doing the pre-bought kindle books? That’s one way I keep my giveaways pretty dang low. I buy them as gifts when they’re 99cents (or on a big sale) then send the gift to myself and forward at a later date when the giveaway happens. It works great and has saved me a ton over the last couple years.

I love that trick with Amazon books – I need to do it more. I tend to forget it’s an option until COYER is super close and then I’ve missed all these deals. But your right, it’s a great way to keep giveaway expenses down, I should use it more!

    • Berls

Thanks Bea! I’m already wondering why I said that LOL! Well lets see I’d I can stick to it!

    • Berls

That’s why I started the budget – it’s so scary when I don’t keep track! We’ll see how the no book buying goes, I bet sales happen…

A no-book buying month, huh? Ambitious, ducks, really ambitious… At any rate, stop complaining – you’re doing fine, despite the leg injury that kept you from gaining more via exercising. I think your budget looks great. And, hey, you’ve GOT one, which is more than I can say for yours truly πŸ˜› I love your new books – what’s this “If I break”? It’s calling my name, lol πŸ™‚

Haha fair enough, I’ll stop πŸ˜‰ Oh I know, it looks good right? I think it’s still a Kindle freebie. Just sayin’ …

    • Berls

That’s the plan. Now I can add books, just can’t spend my money on them. So gift cards don’t count. I’m thinking I’m going to try and just donate this money to the library though, since I don’t need to buy more books really. That way they’ll just have more books for me to borrow πŸ™‚
