November 23, 2014 Sunday Post 38

Welcome to the 64th Edition of My Sunday Post!
Sunday Post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Basically it’s a chance to talk about the books you bought, borrowed, blogged about, and read for the week and what’s coming in the week ahead – and then share them with a much wider blogging community. Check out the details here.

News At Home

If I ever needed proof that thinking positive when things are going rough worked, this past week would be the perfect proof. You may remember that last week’s Sunday Post I reported a really rough week. But I was optimistic that things would get better and they have. Last week was one of the best week’s I’ve had all year!

For one – and this is possibly the biggest news – my brother finally came out to my mom. I’ve known for a very long time and have been helping keep it and the boyfriend a secret. Not easy, since I’m a sucky liar. But last week’s seizure – and the phone call I got from his boyfriend – solidified that it was time to tell mom. She was suspicious that there was some secret for a while but getting a phone call while he’s having a seizure means someone is obviously with him. So bad things can lead to good things right? Now coming out to my mom is a HUGE deal because she’s a Jehovah’s Witness and our family does not have the best track record with accepting anything other than that faith. While I’m a good test case for how things can go horribly wrong, the past few years my relationship with my mom has gone from non-existent to pretty darn good. And I think that paved the way for my brother. She’s not thrilled, but she said, “I will always love you no matter what.” I know we should expect no less, but in our family that’s a small miracle. Sure, it would be great if she didn’t care at all, but as it stands Philip is so relieved and I’m thrilled. For one, I can stop tip-toeing around what I say about him on the blog (I didn’t want to be responsible for outing him!) and two, I’m just so happy to see my brother so happy. So yay!

My brother and his boyfriend are joining us all for Thanksgiving on Thursday – and we’re crossing our fingers that mom will be there too (Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, so it would be a BIG deal). I sat down with my step-son’s mom this week and we made the menu and decided who’s cooking what. So I have Apple Pie, Pecan Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Chocolate Pie, Bourbon Sweet Potatoes, Cranberry Jell-O, and homemade rolls to make this week. I can’t wait for Thursday, so much good food and a landmark for our family!

We also have made a lot of headway with my step-son’s aunt (the teen who was in trouble last week). It’s going to be a slow process, but there’s a lot less fighting going on and a lot of healing. Another yay!

And I have other HUGE news, but before I can share it I have to wait for some Ts to be crossed and Is to be dotted. But we can just say that this alone would have made my week. I screamed and almost cried when I got the good news. Maybe even went into a bit of shock. So hopefully I’ll be telling you all about that next week.

Blog News

Michelle and I have PROMISED each other neither one of us will say “I Have An Idea” for at least a month. But that was after Michelle’s latest idea that was too good not to talk about, morph a bit, and turn into a 2015 year long challenge. We spent almost all day Friday on the phone working on the details, writing the sign-up post (me) and designing the logo (Michelle). We’ll have all the details December 1st, but a little teaser:

2015 we’re going back to school but this time your in charge of the assigned reading list! Join Me and Michelle @ Because Reading for the 2015 Reading Assignment Challenge!

Michelle and I are also doing a recap of 2014 and glance forward at 2015 starting December 22nd and running until January 2nd. This isn’t something we’re hosting or anything (not structured at all), but feel free to join in and use Michelle’s awesome logo!

Finally… I know, so much! But a reminder that we’re hosting COYER again. Sign-Ups are open now and we kick off December 20th. It’s going to be a lot of fun and we’ve built such a great community, we’d love to have you join us.

Winter 2014-2015 COYER Sign Ups

November’s Challenges

  • NaNoWriMo – At this point, I probably should just say that it’s not happening. Life has been too hectic. I’ll have to have my own version in December!
  • NaNoWriMo Bloggy Style – I’m doing really well with this actually. I have reviews scheduled all the way into January! As of now I have 21 posts scheduled and another 16 setup. That’s more than 30, so woot!
  • NetGalley November – I backtracked 🙁 See someone (MICHELLE!) shared a book that I had to have. And then in the process of finding it, I found 1 other one. So I don’t think I’ll end this month with the percentage I had hoped for. But I am reading my second NetGalley book this month and my goal was to read three, so that should be doable. Win, right?

Wow, it has been busy for you! And I’m so happy that your brother was able to come out and it seems it has been accepted well enough by your family. I like your idea of the e-book challenge/assignment. I’m thinking I need to do something like that, but will probably set it up as a challenge for next year. You can check out my Sunday Post in the link below!

Aw You’re welcome! I’m glad to help get the word out 😀 and thanks so much, that’s too sweet! You have a great week!

    • Berls

Thanks! It really is! I’m still in a bit of shock and I’m just so gosh darn happy for my brother. He’s my best friend in the world, so its huge for me too 🙂

  2. Bookworm Brandee

I’m a huge believer in the power of positive thinking AND things working out the way they’re supposed to. So yay for more proof that it works!! I’m so, so happy for you and your brother, Berls. And I hope your Thanksgiving celebration is more joyful! I’m glad other things are working out as well. And I can’t wait for you BIG news! I’m also intrigued with the latest project you and Michelle are working on. 😉 What a wonderful week! Cheers to this week being just as positive and eventful! <3

Thanks Brandee! I’ve always tried to have the think positive outlook and sometimes you start to wonder when it will work, but this week was like the answer to all the times I doubted. I’m so excited to tell yall my good news, if things finalize before next weekend, I’m sure I’ll post about it in COYER – no way I’ll contain myself!

      Have a great thanksgiving!!

  3. Lola

I am happy to hear this week was much better then last week! It must have been difficult to keep such a big secret from your mom, it’s a good thing he was able to come out now. And that your mom was pretty accepting.

Wow you have a lot cooking to do this week! It always feels a bit weird when all americans are gearing up for a holiday we don’t celebrate here.

I am curious about your other big news, hope you will be able to talk about is soon! And your year long challenge sound interesting, looking forward to hear all the details and then decide if I want to join.

Thanks Lola! Yes, it was difficult – especially when its the reason he’s so happy and you can’t share that. So I’m thrilled.

I’m so excited for cooking – I don’t do it much and this is the perfect excuse. I tend to forget that its just us Americans LOL! That must be weird!

I hope the challenge will be one you’ll enjoy – I think it will be fun and a nice challenge. Details soon 🙂 Have a great week!

    • Berls

Thanks Laura! Its really a big milestone for sure!

Haha well I’ve been busy – but juggling would imply I’m successfully juggling it all. For everything I’m caught up in, there’s 3 I’m behind on :/ Oh well! We try right?

      Have a great week!

  4. Katherine

How great that your mother took the news so well! And how great that neither you or your brother have to keep the secret anymore. Can’t wait to hear your other news! All these challenges are seriously tempting me! I’ll have to pick one or two to sign up for. But then stop so I don’t get too overwhelmed. Have a great week!

I know! That’s my problem – I want to do them ALL (and host half of them LOL) but if you can join us for some, we’d be excited to have you!

Thanks – I’m in such a good mood, I may be glowing right now 😉 Have a great week!

  5. Angie F.

Aw, I’m so glad things are working out for your brother so far! Coming out is never easy, even when there aren’t religious reasons getting in the way. I do hope your mom decides to join you all for Thanksgiving! 😀

So many upcoming challenges! I can’t wait!

Thanks Angie, me too! It’s a shame it is so hard – it really frustrates me that it is! But I’m so thankful I won’t get on that soap box today 🙂

I’m excited to release details of the challenge, I think you’ll really like it!

    • Berls

It was and it was getting harder and harder, since he and his boyfriend have started living together. I’m so glad we get to move forward honestly!

I can’t wait to spill the beans about the challenge – December 1st! 🙂 Have a great week!

    • Berls

Yay!! I think these two challenged will work really well together (at least based on what I know of yours). Can’t wait!

I’m so happy and even if she doesn’t make it to Thanksgiving, I feel like a huge milestone’s been reached!

      Have a great week!

  6. Michelle @ Because Reading

Ugh! That Michelle can be such a bad influence! She really did a number on things this week. From added books to making up year long challenges that need a somewhat hard to write post, planning, logos and 6 hour phone calls. I hope she is serious when she says no more IDEAS!!!

I can’t wait to hear the big NEW!!! Oh wait…EXPLODES!!! I can’t wait for you to tell everyone!!! SQUEEEEE!!!

I am so happy for your brother, that is such a hard secret to keep and I am so glad your mom was so open-ish. 🙂 That a good step in the right direction.

Have a great week! We will talk soon but just to chat…NO IDEAS!!!

    • Berls

Agreed! No more ideas until I’m done catching up from our last few! But chatting absolutely!

I almost posted about THE NEWS but decided it would be a bad move – a jinx. I need everything in place before I shout it to the world.

      Talk soon

  7. Lexxie

WOW, what a busy and amazing week you had, Berls!! I’m so happy your brother was able to come out to your mom, and that it went well. I know a gay couple where one is out and the other is not, and it’s actually really hard for both of them. And it makes me really sad that one thinks he can’t fully be himself in front of his parents. I’m glad your brother will be able to do that now – it must be a relief for all of you, really.
And hey, you sure know how to get my curiosity going… Should I start guessing what your news is? The one where you need to cross some Ts and dot some Is? 😛 It’s not fair to just share a tiny bit and not more, you know?
I can’t wait for December 1 to know more about your year-long challenge.
I hope next week will live up to this past week, enjoy your new books, and have fun 🙂

I can imagine how hard that must be for gay couples. I know a lot of them are used to it, but how incredibly unfair that they’ve had to become used to it!!! I always felt bad for Jonathon that we had to schedule things so mom and him wouldn’t see each other, though he always seemed fine with it. But they’re pushing on a year together now and I’m glad there’s no more hiding.

I know – I almost didn’t say anything at all about my big news, but I’m bursting at the seams! I just don’t want to jinx anything by spilling the beans before its all finalized. But hopefully next week 😉

  8. Nyze

Yay for the coming out thing! That would surely take a lot of courage so I’m so happy for your brother. Reading about those delicious food you guys will prepare on Thanksgiving made me hungry. Lol. Have a great week ahead babe ♥

    • Berls

I know it must have been challenging for him, since her reaction was so uncertain! I’m thrilled it went so well.

I know, I’ve been planning to cook it all week and have been getting hungry myself! Have a great week too!

  9. Trish

Sounds like a fantastic week all round and I’m sure your brother is relieved at not having to carry such a heavy secret around. Delighted things are on the up and I’m looking forward to hearing what your big news is 🙂 Your 2015 event sounds interesting, I’ll be keeping an eye on that. Have a great week.
