Oh… my…. God!!! Vengeance in Death is EASILY the best in the series so far. For so many reasons, I just couldn’t put it down…
He is an expert with the latest technology...a madman with the mind of a genius and the heart of a killer. He quietly stalks his prey. Then he haunts the police with cryptic riddles about the crimes he is about to commit - always solved moments too late to save the victims' lives.
Police lieutenant Eve Dallas found the first victim butchered in his own home. The second lost his life in a vacant luxury apartment. The two men had little in common. Both suffered unspeakable torture before their deaths. And both had ties to an ugly secret of 10 years past - a secret shared by none other than Eve's new husband, Roarke.
For one… the mystery was the hardest to solve and so intense. There were several twists that I didn’t spot, not from a mile away and not from an inch away. And looking back, the hints were there. I could have seen them. But I was blinded, by the same things Eve was. Because Vengeance in Death got so damn personal!
Rourke always seems to be connected in some way to the murders, but usually in a peripheral way. This time it’s ALL ABOUT Rourke. It’s getting so personal and Eve is having to make tough calls, blur lines she never dreamed she’d blur, and of course, she’s scared to top it all off.
There’s a new character in the mix too, named McNabb. He’s a tech expert and a royal pain in Peabody’s ass. Which was awesome! I love him and hope he’s a permanent addition – he certainly felt like he could be! And then there was the action! Things got seriously intense at points – including a really great car chase – and I found myself on the edge more often than ever before in this series.
I think the icing on the cake was getting to know Rourke better. We saw his past more clearly and see pieces of him he’s buried so deep, he probably never thought he’d be facing them again. This included some really new angles of Somerset and I’m curious to see how Vengeance in Death‘s events will impact Somerset and Eve’s relationship. Maybe they’ll get along?! LOL!
On to the next book! Still haven’t figured out when I’ll be able to pry myself away…
