Just back from Paris, Shelby barely has time to get over her jet lag before she is right back in the thick of things. Uncle Joey, the local mob boss, needs her help to find out what his son is hiding from him. Detective Harris, AKA Dimples, has an unsolved homicide on his hands, along with a missing engagement ring. Shelby's husband, Chris, just got promoted to partner in his law firm, and she has yet to see his new office or meet his new secretary. Add to that the opportunity to purchase a beautiful home, and Shelby is racing from one thing to the next while trying to keep them all straight.

When a courier in Uncle Joey’s organization turns up dead, it’s up to Shelby and her mind-reading powers to find out who killed him and why. The house Shelby wants to buy has a few problems that go beyond the building code, and the murder she’s helping Dimples solve has ties to Chris’ law firm. Even using all of her skills, Shelby finds one hidden deception after another. And if she’s not careful, it might be the one she least expects that will kill her.

Every time I get an email from Colleen saying another Shelby book is ready, I squee a little. Shelby has never once let me down. Every adventure with her is fun, full of twists, and scares me just a little!

What Worked:

  • The characters! Gah, I just love everybody at this point. Shelby is just such a great character – I love the way she talks through her predicaments to herself and KNOWS she’s pushing it. Uncle Joey and the gang were a particular favorite element for me in Hidden Deception, especially with some developments regarding Uncle Joey’s son.
  • The mystery was, for the most part, very satisfying. Shelby’s mind reading abilities, combined with her particular talent to land herself right in the middle of everything, keeps the pace moving at a fun pace.
  • As always, I love the way Colleen weaves Shelby’s responsibilities as a mother and wife into the story. It keeps things grounded and also can add some intensity to situations.
  • The narration is always great. Wendy Tremont King is Shelby and Ramos and Uncle Joey and Chris and Dimples… you get the point. I would really throw a fit if someone had to replace her!

What Didn’t Work:

  • Shelby has proven to me time and time again that she’s a smart girl. That being said, I wanted to slap her silly for not picking up on Uncle Joey’s mystery (there were two). It was kind of obvious to me and I think she either should have clued in faster to be believable or something needed to stand in the way of her realization. It was still fun and didn’t ruin Hidden Deception for me at all.
  • Hidden Deception was another great moment in the Shelby Nichols series. I hope Colleen is already working on the next one, because I’m ready!

I think I have the first book in this series, but haven’t read it yet. It sure sounds like a good one. Shelby sounds like a great character and I am glad to hear this series keeps going strong. Great review!
