Sunday Post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Basically it’s a chance to talk about the books you bought, borrowed, blogged about, and read for the week and what’s coming in the week ahead – and then share them with a much wider blogging community. Check out the details here.

News at Home: Things Are Looking Good!

OMG, so much has happened since I last posted – and I’m sorry it’s been so long! I was just so busy once work started trying to get my classroom ready. I’m so incredibly happy with how my room turned out – there’s still a few tweaks to take care of (including some I’ve already done since these pictures were taken), but for the most part, this is it:

This is the hallway leading up to my classroom. I hate that the paper is crooked. Grr…

I’m so incredibly proud of how this door turned out. I need to edit the leaves – some of the kiddos aren’t in our class anymore and I have some new ones. But yeah, I’m proud of this.

This is our room as you walk in the door. That’s a life sized ten frame taped to the floor – I use it for them to line up but also plan to use it for teaching math more interactively.

Another angle of the room – from the back right corner. That door is the class restroom and beside it is where the writing center will live.

This is the room from the bathroom door. We’ve got our dress up and kitchen play center in the corner, the computer center and then our class library. Each of those bins has a cute label in it now for the types of books in it. And that bench has a red cushion that my mom made but wasn’t ready yet for the picture.

And finally a view of the room from the back. Lots of little details have been added since this picture bit the overall impact is similar.

All that took a TON of time to finish up.  Just as a perspective, here’s a couple before pictures:

If you look at the picture above taken from the bathroom door, you can see how this part of the room looks now vs before. That’s the door that has a big tree on it now.

The front of the room.

This is the corner with the play kitchen, that big tree and the computers.

Anyway, that’s my classroom.  School started Monday and it was the true test of whether I’ve ended up at a better place or not… And I MOST DEFINITELY HAVE!  This past week was a breeze compared to any week at my school last year.

The kids are way better behaved – I do have a couple challenging kiddos but they don’t even register in comparison to the challenges I had last year.  The school is so much better organized and the administration is so supportive.  Everyone in the school is happy and we’re all on the same page.  I love that everywhere I went I saw teachers doing the same things as I was to teach their kids how to be in school – rather than putting the cart before the horse and trying to teach academics.
I know the school and caliber of kids has made a huge difference,  but I know a large part of it is me too.  I’m so much better prepared. I’m thankful for the work  did this summer, for one.  But also,  just knowing how to setup a Kinder class and what procedures to teach has been hugely helpful.  My kids already know I care – but they also know that I mean business.  I think it’s going to be a great year.

My hours this past week don’t even compare to last year.  Last year I was in campus by 6:45a and didn’t leave until 8 or 9 at night.  This was my schedule this week :

Monday 7:15 – 5

Tuesday 7:15 – 4:30

Wednesday 7:30 – 4:30

Thursday 7:30 – 4

Friday 7:30-3:30

Saturday 9:15 – 10:45

Can you believe it?! Human hours.  And I haven’t been scrambling those hours at all. I’ve made parent phone calls,  organized extra school supplies (I have butt loads this year that I DIDN’T BUY!!), and prepared for the next day.

The one bad thing that has happened since I last posted was that I was in a car accident.  There was pouring rain and an asshole going 90 mph. S/he hydroplaned and swerved into my lane, clipping the front of my car.  I hydroplaned and went into a 360 (or 3..so is that a 1080?). I ended up on the guard rail,  which damaged the shit out of my car  but most likely saved me from flipping.  It was terrifying and when I had to drive in the rain again I pretty much had a panic attack.  The worst part is that the person who hit me didn’t stop. That’s right,  they left without any concern for whether I was hurt or anything.  So we had to pay to fix the car out of our pockets… Thankfully Kiko was able to do it for cheap.  Tauri is a good car and I’m glad she’s still running well.

Blog News

Judy a few days left to finish up the series you’re reading for Can You Read a Series in a Month? Challenge. I actually finished nine a couple days ago and I loved it!

COYER also wraps up this upcoming weekend.

#FitReaders Update

Not a ton to report.  But with school back in,  I’m consistently hitting more than 10k steps. And with the kids needing so much training in the cafeteria, I haven’t really been having lunch… So weight loss better be coming.

This Week on the Blog Look For:

Thank you Jen! It was scary – not sure I’ll drive in rain without panicking a little for a while.

I keep pinching myself to see if it’s real and I feel like I’m waiting for a shoe to drop. So far, it’s great. I even have off on Monday and forgot! I never forgot days off last year. I’m actually enjoying my job!

It’s impressive to see how you changed the room, it looks so fun and welcoming now with all the colors and personal touches you added. I hope your kiddo’s like it as well. And I am so happy to hear this week was a lot better than at your previous school, sounds like you’re definitely in a better school this year.

I am sorry to hear you have been in a car accident! It sounds very frightening and then the person who hit you just drove off as well. But I am really glad to hear you weren’t hurt physically, but I can imagine it did leave a mental scare.

I hope this week will be a good one!

Thanks Lola! It was a lot of work, but very worth it to have such an inviting, organized room.

The accident was frightening and I don’t know how long it will take me to be able to drive in the rain without freaking out a bit! I’m just glad to be okay I guess 🙂

Hope you’re having a great week!

I love your classroom! But I’m mostly thrilled that you’re so happy in your new school, Berls. That’s a relief to hear. I’m so, so happy for you!! I can’t believe you and Tauri were in an accident OR that the jerk just left you there. Ugh! People! I’m glad you and Tauri are okay though. I hope this week continues going well with your kiddos. I can only imagine the difference between this year and last, but you’re such a wonderful teacher. These kiddos and their parents are lucky to have you. 😀
I can’t believe I missed out on the Read a Series in a Month challenge. But I guess I’ve missed out on quite a bit this summer…at least in the blogosphere. I *did* spend a lot of quality time with Sky though. It’s weird around here, her not being here. But she’s been busy with Orientation and she starts classes TODAY!
    So I’ll be around more often now – hopefully I can stay caught up. 🙂 {{hugs}}

I’m unbelievably happy that your year this year is starting off so wonderful. Such a relief! I so did not like seeing you so stressed. I was ready to get my whips and chains and head there to knock some sense into your administration. Grrr! But a hit-n-run?! I wish I was a badass assassin who could track down dirtbags. I would do some very nasty things to them and not feel bad at all. 3:)

I’m sorry to hear about your car accident and I can definitely relate to having the jerk not stop. I had somebody cross the yellow line and hit me head on which ended up running me off the road into a ditch. I was so angry and then we had to pay our deductible! This year definitely sounds WAY better than last year and I love your classroom. Your door especially is adorable. Have a great week!

I’m glad to hear that this year is going so much better than last year. Education is so important is so much better when the teacher isn’t miserable and overworked. Not to mention that your life will be so much better and less stressed. I’m so sorry to hear about your car wreck. I’m really glad that you’re okay. Sucks that they didn’t stop to make sure you weren’t injured or to pay for it. Grrr. Anyway, you’re okay, which is the big thing. I hope you have a great week.

Amazing transformation! I’m sorry you had that scary car accident experience, but glad to hear you didn’t get hurt. Hope you have a great week!

Thank you Michelle, I’m really proud of the room. Happy reading! Miss your face more xoxo!

Thank you Trish! It was a lot of work, but I’m proud of it. I’m really hopeful for this year 🙂 I know, I just don’t get how they could see me doing 360s and just leave! But I’m okay, so I guess that’s what matters most.

So happy I clicked over to see the fantastic classroom you have set up and so delighted it is so different to this time last year. Car accident sounds horrific and awful the person didn’t stop. All the best for the school year, sounds like you are ready to rock the learning!
