The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Basically it’s a chance to talk about the books you bought, borrowed, blogged about, and read for the week and what’s coming in the week ahead – and then share them with a much wider blogging community. Check out the details here.
News at Home – Welcome April!
Happy April everyone! I kicked off April playing a hilarious April Fool’s joke on my class 🙂 I’ve never been someone who does anything for April Fools but this year I realized I had to.. On March 31st during calendar time we talked about how it was the last day of March. I asked them what month was starting next and they not only – correctly – told me it was going to be April, but were very excited that it was going to be April Fools. Seeing the kiddos excitement, I decided I needed to come up with a joke. So here’s what I did…
You should have seen their excitement as I told them about the Lirpa-sloof bird. I made sure it was educational – we learned about what migration is, what birds normally eat – but mostly it was fun. I gave them all an apple and we went out to our school garden. I told them that to get the bird to come out they had to quietly sing it’s name “Lirpa-sloof” while holding their apples in the air. They would have done it for hours I think, though I only let them do it for 10 minutes. They were CERTAIN they saw the bird too – I had quite some pictures! Then I had them help me turn the bird’s name around, letter by letter – which spells “April-fools.” I asked them to help me read it and finally they figured it out. They were stunned. They couldn’t believe I lied to them. But then I showed them the video I took – which I wish I could show you! – and they laughed and decided it was an awesome. And spent the rest of the day trying to get me (and I let them think they did of course 😉 ).
That was the highlight of my week, because the first half of the week was STAR testing. As in, 3-5 grade rules the school and the rest of us have to go through hell so they can do well on their tests. Believe me, I get it. Not only are these tests a huge deal for all schools, but my school is IR2 (Improvement Required 2 years) so it’s HUGE. But our schedule sucked. We had specials first thing in the morning (art, PE, or music) – meaning they didn’t have that afternoon break from class – and it was 20 minutes shorter than normal. We also had to have indoor recess. And we had to be super duper quiet. It was as stressful for them as it was for the 3-5 graders I think. So we all needed April Fools 🙂 But hey – we’re down to 42 days left in the school year (37 for me because I’ll be out for a week in May)!
I’m still sucking at replying to comments and visiting, but I’m getting a bit better at having regular content. One step at a time right?
March was a good month – I got in 4 5k walks I think and a bunch of 1 miles. Yesterday I got in my first 5k of April and I’ve decided it’s time to start building towards at least 1 10k a month. So today I’ll be doing 4 miles and I’m hoping I can do 5 miles next weekend and finally 6 miles (10k) by the last weekend this month. 3.1 miles (5k) has gotten easy 🙂 My speeds aren’t fast, but that’s not really the point for me.
