Sunday Post | Recess Required!?!

January 31, 2016 Sunday Post 20

Sunday Post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Basically it’s a chance to talk about the books you bought, borrowed, blogged about, and read for the week and what’s coming in the week ahead – and then share them with a much wider blogging community. Check out the details here.

News at Home – Recess Required!?!

Well we survived our audit this week at school and the administration was so grateful that they didn’t make us stay late at all this week for meetings or tutoring. Of course, I had so much work to do to make up for the extra work they piled on that I never got out of there before 4:30, but still, it was nice not to have meetings. We return to business as usual this week though, so fingers crossed I can find some way to still get out by 4:30/5!

The newest twist is that my school district recently had a board meeting where they voted to make 20 minutes of recess a requirement for all elementary students for the remainder of the year and 30 minutes for next school year. We are not allowed to make kids sit out any part of recess as a consequence for bad behavior. Now I’m not sure if I’m allowed to publically comment on this, even though I’m not actually saying the name of my school or using my real name. So I won’t. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions. I’m sure you know me well enough to know my complex thoughts on the topic.

On topics other than work – we’ve started planning the birthday party for my friend who passed away in December’s daughter. It’ll be her first birthday and me and my friend’s sister, Stacie, are throwing the party. Usually it would have been the three of us throwing the party, but we’re determined to make it as good as Stephanie would have. Complete with difficult to pull of themed decorations and treats. The theme is butterflies. I’m excited to do it, even though it makes me miss Stephanie that much more.

Blog News

Nothing special to report, except that I suck at blogging and have fully accepted it. LOL. What I mean is that life keeps getting in the way of even my lighter posting schedule and we’ll see if I manage to get everything I planned to up this week. Fingers crossed!

#FitReaders Update

Still haven’t made it back to the gym – guess that’s a February goal now! I tried to do a viritual 5k yesterday for the challenge, but underestimated how far I’d need to go and my route was too short, by about a mile. But that meant I got in my fun mile for the month, so that’s something. 5k is also a goal for February now. Eating continues to go well and I’m still losing pretty steadily, so that’s good. Just wish I felt like I was doing all I was supposed to with the gym.

Interesting. My son goes to a private (British) school, and they have no qualms about using recess as a tool to get kids to ponder their less-than-wonderful deeds. Eric actually missed recess time a few times, but Hubs and I saw no reason to contest the teacher’s decision to act in this way. I think Eric benefitted from it.

I think that kids have to see consequences for their behavior, and recess is a powerful consequence. But apparently there are studies that say otherwise and that’s what running things now…. I’m finding ways to discipline still. Getting creative.

I’m glad you had a pretty good week, Berls. Congrats on things going well with the audit. I’m sure it’s a relief for you…and you’re the only one I really care about as far as staff/administration goes. 😉 Oh goody! More reason for recess being the kiddos’ favorite part of the day. I get that it’s important for kids to be active but it isn’t fair that you can’t use it as a consequence for bad behavior…because seriously, I *know* it’s the one thing that *hurts* them to lose. Hmm, we’ll have to think on that, see if there’s something else that you can use.
    I hope this week goes well for you…my fingers are crossed for good behavior from your students and early quittin’ time for you every day! {{{hugs}}}

Thank you Brandee! Well I left at 7 today 🙁 but I’m shooting for early the rest of the week. Mondays tend to be rough. I’m starting to do an end of the day reward for those who were good and making the rest sit with their heads down. It’s an educational activity – today we did alphabet bingo – so no one can fault me for “playing” with the kids. But it’s not the same for sure – recess is so impactful.

I haven’t got a gym membership, but I did get me a cheap fitbit so I have joined Feb. fitbloggers. 🙂 I am ready…lol.

Take a deep breath…now let it out. And another…let it out. Everything will come together. I have every confidence. Don’t get stressed and don’t try to force stuff. Go with the flow. Think of it all like a fart. If you have to force it out, then I guarantee you’ll probably not like the result. If you let it rip naturally then it’ll be so much better. 😉 Oh! And I have the perfect meditation video for you. I’ll share it on Facebook. 😀

I never understood the reasoning behind less recess. Kids are kids for fuck’s sake. They need to run around and take more breaks than adults. I forget where I read that there are schools who have brought back recess with something like 3 breaks a day, 2 short (morning and afternoon) and a longer one at lunch and their kids scores have skyrocketed. Well, duh. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Lmao you are killing me Carol. As always a great laugh, just when I need it. I agree, kids need recess and I think the longer recess will be great for them. My struggle has been with the no taking it away as a consequence for bad behavior. But I think I’m working it out. I just keep winging it this year lol

Thanks Terri, I appreciate it. I’m hard on myself, having trouble accepting my new reality I guess. But I’m getting there 🙂

I’m glad the audit went well! I know it was very stressful! As for the recess thing, I think we are on the same page. I hope the birthday party is everything Stephanie would have made it – y’all will do a beautiful job!

Thanks Charlie, it was and I’m so glad it’s over. Yeah, I feel like teachers are the only ones getting the full picture of the decision, so I’m sure you get it. I’m hoping we’ll be at to make the party like Stephanie would have made it too, thankfully we have until April so there’s some time to get it right! Have a great week Charlie 🙂

Thanks Melanie – I know I am tough on myself. I just see all these reviews backlogged, not to mention all the post ideas and I get frustrated because back when I was posting daily I didn’t get such a backlog 🙁 guess I just need to accept my new reality.

Thanks Laura, I’m hoping to will go really well. It’s not til April, so we have time – but you know how time flies!
Yeah you’ve kind of hit on my concern with the recess. We’ll see how it goes I guess. :/

Is that 20 minutes of recess per day? Here, kids have 15 minutes recess several times per day, and I think it actually really helps all of them to be outside, run around and spend some of that pent up energy. That way, when they are in class, even those who may usually move around a bit can concentrate more, and class is just more calm, quiet and helps the students learn more. I hope you’ll see that the regular pauses will make things easier for you, Berls!
Have a fantastic week ahead and happy reading.

Yeah, it’s 20 minutes of recess per day – they’ve already been getting 10 minutes, so it’s just more time. Kids definitely need time to run around and spend that pent up energy. The difference is not being able to take away recess as a consequence. Some of the kiddos are so disrespectful and disobedient, but now I won’t be taking recess away as a consequence for that behavior, and that’s pretty much the only consequence I’ve been able to give that means anything to them. So we’ll see how that change goes. Thanks! Have a great week as well 🙂

*hugs* well I came up with something. At the end of the day, I’m doing a special reward for kids who behaved. Today it was a game of alphabet bingo. The rest have to sit with their heads down and miss the fun. I think it’ll be very effective, though it’s harder because recess is what theyre used to, so I have to reteach the consequences.
