Sunday Post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Basically it’s a chance to talk about the books you bought, borrowed, blogged about, and read for the week and what’s coming in the week ahead – and then share them with a much wider blogging community. Check out the details here.

News at Home – 102.8

So sorry I just disappeared suddenly! Last Friday (the 15th) I was all ready to enjoy my long weekend and all of a sudden my throat started hurting. It was about 8pm. By 10pm I was curled up under the covers shivering and hurting all over. But Kikko said I was burning up. I tossed and turned all night, feeling horrible. The next morning I asked my mom to call my insurance hotline and figure out what urgent care centers were in-network, since I had no idea and I was feeling worse than I’ve felt in a long time. Long story short, I found an urgent care center close to home and – THANK GOODNESS! – they were not busy at all and saw me immediately. I couldn’t even fill out my own paperwork; I was too sick to read without feeling like I’d pass out. When they took my temperature it was 102.8! I was shocked – I can’t remember the last time I had a fever that bad.

Turns out I have Strep Throat – I say have, because I’m still on the medicine. It was funny because the doctor told me it would take about ten minutes to get the results from the test, but he came back just two minutes later saying it was an instant positive for strep throat. Which was what I had suspected, based on how swollen my throat was. You know how they say to look for white specks, because that’s Strep? My throat was so swollen my tonsils were basically touching each other and I couldn’t see anything (or breathe or swallow!).

Despite getting medicine immediately, I still had a fever over 102 most of Sunday. It wasn’t until Monday morning that I finally got under 100. And by the end of the day Monday I was back to regular temperature. Just in time to go back to work… GRR!!!

And then work this week was ROUGH! The kids were not in great form, not to mention that I was exhausted and weak most the week. But on top of that, my school is an IR2 school (Improvement Required, year 2), which means we’re under a lot of pressure. Well, the principal is a nice lady with poor management and communication skills basically. And this upcoming Tuesday – in 2 days – we’re getting this massive audit (for lack of a better term) and, because she has done a really poor job making sure we know what we’re supposed to have in our classrooms, we’re massively unprepared. The thing that really sucks is that she’s bitching us out for not having what we’re supposed to, when a lot of this is stuff I’ve never heard we needed until this past week. I’m trying to get my shit together so that I’m not THE reason we fail, but at the same time I have a hard time working too much when if she had just told me back in August I was supposed to have this shit I would have had it! I worked until 7pm Wednesday – Friday and then some Saturday and some today. Plus our TAs have been so busy, none of my copying got done so guess who’s paying for copies this weekend from FedEX? GRRR!!!!

Two positives did happen though. One, I FINALLY got some recognition for how hard I’ve been working and they moved me up two “phases” at work. Basically it’s like a continuous performance review and I moved up a couple levels. Yay! The other positive- which I can’t say a whole lot about – is that one of the kiddos in my class that I started evaluations for back in October because I’m like 95% certain he’s on the spectrum and in need of serious help is probably finally going to get placed where he needs to be in early February. So only a couple more weeks of him screaming and yelling most the day at the top of his lungs!! Yay!!!

Blog News

I had intended to do a lot of blogging over the holiday weekend, but between being sick and all the extra work, instead of getting ahead I’m behind (AGAIN!). I’ll do my best to get back on track with my book of the year (from Erratic Project Junkie) results and some reviews the next couple weeks. Cross your fingers for me, I need it!

#FitReaders Update

As you can imagine, sleep is really the only thing I’ve been doing well. But I don’t think exercise with a fever of 102.8 makes sense, right? And I haven’t been hungry until the last couple days. So we’ll see how this week goes.

I have no idea how I missed your Sunday post last week, Berls, but I did. I hope you’re feeling much better now, and that the audit thing on Tuesday went well. I don’t understand how the school doesn’t have information sheets for each grade, so that all the teachers know exactly what kind of equipment and tools they need to have in the classroom, as well as what to do when there is a kind of audit.
I’m glad the kid in your class will now get the help he needs, so that he can learn better! And it will also be helpful for you, I’m sure 😉
    *hugs*

Thanks, I am feeling a lot better and I’m even more diligent about the hand sanitizer! My school administration is infuriating, they’re just disorganized and poor communicators.
We have the meeting for the boy on Thursday, I can’t wait! I’m really hoping it goes the way I expect – with him getting placed in a special school. I’d be shocked if it doesn’t. Fingers crossed!

    Omigoodness, Berls! Strep sucks! I had it every other week when I first started working daycare when I was in college. It is a good thing that once you get on antibiotics, you usually feel better in a couple of days. But man! Before that…hell! I feel for ya. Hopefully you’re all better now. Although I can’t imagine that the stress and overworking is doing that much good for you. It is awful that your principal is yelling at y’all for something that *SHE* should have had resolved months and months ago. I’ll keep my fingers crossed all goes well in the ‘audit’. I do hope you’re feeling better but you do whatever you need to to take care of YOU! If you’re not around again for a few days…no worries. We’ll still be here, my friend. 😉 Have a great week!! {{{hugs}}}

{{BIG HUG}} Thanks Brandee! This was the longest week ever, since the audit was Tuesday so we had a front loaded week and then the stress was gone but we still had days of work left. Thankfully I’m feeling much better now and the audit seems to have gone well. They didn’t pay much attention to Kinder because we don’t take STAR tests, which makes all the pressure all that more frustrating.

Gah! I can’t imagine having strep that often. Once is enough to last me years – it was so horrible. The kids are trying to kill me… I swear! Hope all is well for you and the family 🙂

Man! It really does hit suddenly doesn’t it?! Thank goodness for urgent care centers! Thanks, I’m feeling much better and am even more diligent about the hand sanitizer now. I refuse to let them kill me this year lol!

Wow, you should be proud of yourself for getting that kid help! Screaming and yelling most of the day- that would be tough. 🙂 Your principal definitely sounds like she doesn’t have her s*** together- I hope your audit goes well, and you shouldn’t have to work late when you’re sick! to scramble. that definitely sucks. 🙁

    Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Greg! It had been tough; the worst is when we come in from recess – he never wants to come in and I basically have to carry him kicking and screaming 🙁 I hope they get him placed correctly – it’s what he and the other kids need.

My principal really doesn’t have her s*** together at all; this past week was so frustrating! But we survived the audit and I’m feeling better… So onwards I guess 🙂 Hope you’ve had a great week!

Have a great day and week!

It is a growing trend that administrators do not share the appropriate information in a timely manner for our staff. That has been my entire teaching experience, despite various people in the “in crowd” hinting for a little notice. I hate that and I’m sorry you are scrambling. I am glad that you got some long overdue recognition. At the beginning of this school year our admin put up gallery walks for all the items she was scored low on that came back from the state (from employees). On one item I put on my sticky, “I have only ever received criticism from my admin the entire time I have been employed at this school.” As for your student, I am glad that the RTI process is working at your school! That is wonderful that he will be soon be receiving the services he needs soon!

It’s so frustrating, isn’t it?!? I feel like we’re constantly getting extra crap dumped on us, and never with an apologetic approach. It’s always, “you should have known”. How?! My administration sucks at communication 🙁 I hate that the negative and poor communication is a trend, but it’s nice to not be alone – if that makes sense. I wish the RTI process could have moved a bit quicker (we started it in October), but I’m thrilled that it’s happening. He needs the help and I can’t take much more. Looks like another week or two – tops! Fingers crossed!!

I am sorry to hear you’ve been so ill, sounds like you had a really bad fever and that Strep Throat sounds nasty. And then your school week was bad too, that must’ve been difficult when not feeling too well. And that’s so frustrating your principal didn’t knew what you needed and now you have to fix it and work much harder this week. Yay for those two positives! Have a great week!

Take care and all the best for that yucky review. Some principals seem to multiply around the world! Sounds so familiar. The main fitness goal for you I would think is getting enough sleep!

    • Berls

Thanks Kathryn! I hate that it’s familiar and yet every teacher friend I know says the poor communication and blame on the staff sounds familiar 🙁 I’m feeling a lot better and have plans to sleep tons this weekend! Hope all is well for you 🙂

I know! I was so pissed – I wanted to have fun and do some blogging, etc and instead I was crumpled up in bed 🙁 but I’m feeling much better now. The situation with my principal sucks, but it is apparently quite common. Doesn’t make it okay, but I guess that’s just life :/ Hope you’re having a great week!

  8. A Voracious Reader

How is she still a principal if she’s so disorganized? That’s one job that takes an uber-organized and succinct person! Anal even! And I mean that in a non-erotic way.

So glad you’re feeling better and I’m sorry you had to go through all that and then the work week on top of it. Grrrr! But yay for good news! I’ll whip up some extra special {{{posivibes}}} for ya. 🙂

Thanks Carol! I think your posivibes are going to get me through the year 🙂 So apparently everyone expected her to get removed by TEA (not the school district but the Texas Educational Association) last year but somehow she survived. They were the ones that came to audit us this week and apparently we did well. But I just don’t see how she’s going to make it another year. She’s such a poor communicator and our upper level kids are not doing well. They aren’t on track to pass at all 🙁 my kiddos are though!

  9. Trish

Urgggh Berls, so sorry you were so sick and then had to recuperate with an extra hard week in work. That’s so rough. Your principal is a nightmare, I know she might be well meaning and doing her best but she really needs to get organised! That’s not really acceptable. Glad to hear there were two positives though and they are pretty great ones. And you made both happen yourself with hard work and grit, so well done!
