What kind of assassin works pro bono?

It’s hard to be a badass assassin when a giant is beating the crap out of you. Luckily, I never let pride get in the way of my work. My current mission is personal: annihilate Mab Monroe, the Fire elemental who murdered my family. Which means protecting my identity, even if I have to conceal my powerful Stone and Ice magic when I need it most.

To the public, I’m Gin Blanco, owner of Ashland’s best barbecue joint. To my friends, I’m the Spider, retired assassin. I still do favors on the side. Like ridding a vampire friend of her oversized stalker—Mab’s right-hand goon who almost got me dead with his massive fists.

At least irresistible Owen Grayson is on my side. The man knows too much about me, but I’ll take my chances. Then there’s Detective Bria Coolidge, one of Ashland’s finest. Until recently, I thought my baby sister was dead. She probably thinks the same about me. Little does she know, I’m a cold-blooded killer . . . who is about to save her life.

I’ve enjoyed all the Elemental Assassin books so far, but Venom is a turning point for me. So many of the layers that the first couple books spent laying are finally coming to fruition and I’m so excited to see where it will go. So don’t be surprised if you see quite a bit of this series after this point 🙂

Note: There are some series spoilers in the review to follow, though none for Venom.

One of my frustrations with Web of Lies had been that after the big bomb dropped at the end of Spider’s Bite about Gin’s sister – Web of Lies danced around the revelation but did nothing about it until the very end.

But Venom came out of the gate punching. Literally. Shortly after Gin has her ass handed to her (on purpose –> read it to find out why.) in the first chapter, her sister makes an appearance. For reasons that I mostly understand, Gin remains true to her spider moniker and handles the situation patiently waiting for the right moment to address the relationship.

But boy did I love Brea! She has the same cajones that Gin has and you can’t help but wonder what her life has been like. Unfortunately you won’t be finding out much, because Gin continues her avoidance methods. Grrr! But Brea is kick ass and I love her.

Another character I was hoping for more from after Web of Lies is Owen Grayson. Well, in Venom he’s still on the sidelines, but I feel him moving more and more to a center role. *Fingers crossed!*

The action, as always, was great and I continue to think this would make a hell of a tv series. Just sayin’ *shrugs* I do have one complaint – there’s SO MUCH REPETITION. Some of it is helpful recap for those of us who had a break in-between books. But then you keep getting the same details, same phrases over and over. It was too much and I really hope it lessens as the series progresses. If it doesn’t I might have to take a break from my planned binge earlier than I’d like.

I won’t be taking a break because of the narration though! Lauren Fortgang is the perfect narrator for this series. I kind of need to slap myself for complaining about her pace in the first book – yes, she has a slow drawl at times, but I realize now she just GOT Gin better than I did. Mistake ammended. Love listening to her and she makes these books just come to life.

Venom set the stage for what promises to be an exciting ride. I’m curious how it manages to fill as many more books as there are out, but I’m confident I’ll enjoy discovering each one!

I love this series and really should continue it soon. I do agree with you about the repetition, although after not having read any of the books in this series for a long time I am going to be happy for the repetition as I know I won’t need to re-read previous books. If you read them in a row though, the repetition can get annoying. And I really liked getting to know Bria in this book. Great review!

You will if you like character driven, these characters are great. Not that the plot isn’t also great… It is 🙂

Not tried this series yet but I do have book one sitting on my shelf, though I think I am better with audios when it comes to these types of books. 🙂 So I have been thinking about getting the first one on audio and trying it. I do think the publishers are hinting that I need to read this series because I have recently been given the last two books in this series unsolicited…lol.

Lol good hint! When I finally get to pulling audios I’m supposed to do these for Brandee so I can share with you too. I just need to get to it… Thanksgiving break maybe!

Oh yeah, the narration is fantastic. I need to get back to this series – I’ve only read through five I believe…
