It’s easy to walk away from lies. Power is another thing.

MacKayla Lane would do anything to save the home she loves. A gifted sidhe-seer, she’s already fought and defeated the deadly Sinsar Dubh—an ancient book of terrible evil—yet its hold on her has never been stronger.

When the wall that protected humans from the seductive, insatiable Fae was destroyed on Halloween, long-imprisoned immortals ravaged the planet. Now Dublin is a war zone with factions battling for control. As the city heats up and the ice left by the Hoar Frost King melts, tempers flare, passions run red-hot, and dangerous lines get crossed.

Seelie and Unseelie vie for power against nine ancient immortals who have governed Dublin for millennia; a rival band of sidhe-seers invades the city, determined to claim it for their own; Mac’s former protégé and best friend, Dani “Mega” O’Malley, is now her fierce enemy; and even more urgent, Highland druid Christian MacKeltar has been captured by the Crimson Hag and is being driven deeper into Unseelie madness with each passing day. The only one Mac can depend on is the powerful, dangerous immortal Jericho Barrons, but even their fiery bond is tested by betrayal.

It’s a world where staying alive is a constant struggle, the line between good and evil gets blurred, and every alliance comes at a price. In an epic battle against dark forces, Mac must decide who she can trust, and what her survival is ultimately worth.

Grrrr. Why? Perhaps I expected too much? Even after all the less than glowing reviews, I hoped that I would be that one person that loved Burned. I wasn’t. Though there were definitely moments of greatness, there were far too many moments in-between and they took to long to come. It wasn’t until the halfway point that things really started happening and I’m still not convinced that what did happen couldn’t have happened in just a few chapters.

Burned was clearly a transitional novel and *hopefully* we’re all setup for great things now. And as much as I know these kinds of novels will happen in a series of any real length, I don’t expect them when I’ve waited so bloody long.

The crazy thing? My biggest complaint is the reverse of my complaint from Iced. I missed Dani and could have stood for a LOT less Mac! I love the Mac and Barrons of the Fever series before Iced – but this Mac and Barrons is hardly recognizable to me. They’re bickering, yes – but rather than the sexual heat from before these arguments feel contrived.

And I can’t blame Barrons for being fed up with Mac. I’m fed up with her! What happened to the woman who would potentially end the world because of her grief? Now she sits idly by for weeks?!?! Come on!

So I like Mac less and what do I get? Chapter after chapter of her, just waiting to get Dani’s POV. I think we had MAYBE three early chapters from Dani’s POV and that was it! Very frustrating, since a lot was going on there.

Thankfully, there were shining elements. There was a fair bit of pretty darn good action in the middle-end bits. And the developments in that last half are filled with possibilities and questions. And, of course, Natalie Ross and Phil Gigante delivered a flawless performance that made even the slowest bits a decent listen.

Am I disappointed? Yes. Am I done with the series? Hell no! I have lots of hope that we can only go up from here. And hopefully faster 🙂

I don’t blame you. I’m going one more and if I’m not happy with the Dani developments I’m done too. I really like Dani so I was excited about a bunch of books from her POV but they haven’t delivered 🙁

I did enjoy Iced and the first 5 books, but not sure if I want to continue this series as from what I’ve heard of Burned it just doesn’t sound good. I don’t mind Dani her pov and even liked her in Iced, but Mac and Barrons that aren’t like the Mac and Barrons I knew, I guess I’ll just stop the series and remember them how they were in the first 5 books. The action does sound well done. Great review!

I think I’d stop were you are too if I could go back and unread it. Now I’m going to continue in hopes of fixing what this book ruined. But if it’s not better with one more book… Well then I quit.

So sorry this didn’t work for you at all, Berls… I’m one of the very few bloggers who loved this one! Maybe I’m just very tolerant when it comes to my favorite series? I don’t know.
I really hope you’ll enjoy the next installment much more – and I hope that Barrons and Mac will be back to their bad-ass sexy selves by then 😉

You did?! Gah, I wish I was very tolerant. I think I’m actually tougher because I have higher expectations. Hoping the next one rocks my world 🙂

I didn’t really mind Iced and Dani grew on me. I haven’t read this one yet, even though I think I preordered it for my Kindle. Wonder why the author switched gears again as I thought Iced and the next 2 were to focus on Dani. I fear I have waited too long with the series and might need to reread it and I hope that isn’t the case when I finally do start Burned. I don’t reread often.

I thought the same thing Barb and I was seriously disappointed not to have more focus on Dani. I’m not sure why she switched gears and what she did with Dani was disappointing 🙁 hopefully you’ll enjoy it more than I did though!

You didn’t? Oh wow, I adored it. Barons is one of my favorite heroes… Until this book that is. Now I’m not sure what to think. I read the series really early in my venture into UF though, so who knows, my standards may have shifted and I might feel differently if I reread fever.

I’m not reading beyond your title, Berls, because I plan to read this soon. I’m sorry it wasn’t all you were hoping it’d be (I’m gleaning this from your title 😉 ) Let’s hope that the next installment, which is coming in early 2016 I believe, is much better.

    I’m sorry about things getting messed up for the surgery. Insurance companies…can’t live with ’em and can’t live without ’em. Gah! I’m so upset on your behalf. I was super excited to hear the tide might be turning with you and your *favorite* kindy though. And I agree with you that you might not have hated being thrown into kindergarten if you’d been better prepared. Anyway, enjoy your Friday!! And keep me posted on any rescheduling of your surgery. {{hugs}}

I hope you end up liking it a lot more than I did… Lexxie liked it so there’s hope 🙂

I couldn’t agree more about insurance companies, I guess I’d rather have a bad one than none at this point. I have an appointment with the new surgeon tomorrow so fingers crossed we get going on the right foot this time!

Thanks – I’m glad things are going so much better too. I don’t particularly feel like going into work tomorrow, but I think that’s just because I’m coming off an extended break and who really wants to go back to work when they’ve had 5 days off to remind them how nice it is to have time at home with your family? Right? Any who… I need to get to bed here. Hugs!!

Still not read ICED yet but this sounds like a bummer. I thought this spin off was suppose to be more about Dani anyway so not sure why there was more Mac, though to much Dani could be to much as well..need a nice balance. 🙂 Hopefully the next one will be great.
