Sunday Post | Going Camping!

July 12, 2015 Sunday Post 42

Sunday Post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Basically it’s a chance to talk about the books you bought, borrowed, blogged about, and read for the week and what’s coming in the week ahead – and then share them with a much wider blogging community. Check out the details here.

News at Home

Well geez, I just looked and my last Sunday Post was June 14th – how’d I get so irregular with what is easily my favorite post of the week? I just love connecting with everyone on a personal level! For some reason I just have a hard time getting my blogging shit together on the weekends right now…. anyway what can I tell you about news at home?

Well…. We’re going camping!!! Y’all I’m so excited because I haven’t had a real vacation since August 2011…. almost 4 YEARS AGO! But all the reasons I haven’t taken a vacation still exist – time, money, lots of people makes it cost a lot, money, lol. Yeah, the main factor is money. Because here’s the thing – when we take a vacation we don’t want it to be just they BF and I. We want a family vacation. And when I say family I probably come up with the most unconventional list you can think of but here’s who’s going on our family vacation: My BF, his son, his son’s mom/his ex, and her husband and two other kids. That’s right! I’m going on vacation with my BF’s ex! Thing is – guess who sat down and planned this thing? Me and her! This really is our family unit. I basically consider her other two kids mine too – not just my stepson. I’ve been around for more than 10 years and we’ve always been so close that I’ve helped raise them too. So our weird little family unit is going camping because WE CAN AFFORD IT! When we look up most vacations with a big group like that we’re looking at spending at least a thousand dollars. This one – camping in a three bedroom cabin – only costs a few hundred 🙂 Plus it’s kind of my ideal vacation – away from everything! Just nature – hiking, swimming, fishing, kayaking! I can’t wait. Of course, that does mean I won’t be around the blog. So we leave on Sunday the 19th and we get back Wednesday the 22nd.

Blog News

I just celebrated my second blogoversary this past week and I have an AMAZING giveaway going on. If you missed it, it’s open until Thursday. Go enter now 🙂

#FitReaders Update

This week I started changing my routine to evening workouts so that I’ll be ready for when I start work next monnth. So my new schedule is:
Monday: Zumba
Tuesday: Zumba
Wednesday: Weight Lifting Class
Thursday: Water Aerobics
Friday: Zumba
Saturday: OFF
Sunday: C25k Run
Step goal: 10k a day, except Saturday

It went really well and I think this new schedule is going to work out well. Right now I’m still also taking Buffy for 3 to 4 15-minute walks a day. Once I start working that will probably go down to two, one in the morning before I leave and one when I get back from work (BF will take her out on lunch break and in evening, so she’s still getting plenty of exercise).

Average steps: 9,155 steps/day (this includes saturday, so I’m good)
Days counting calories: 7
Book budget money earned: $2

Thank you Kimba! I’m worried about the bugs, but the forecast is looking great! I mean it’s looking like 100 degrees but I like that 🙂

Thanks Jen! I’m really looking forward to the trip, never really been camping (not even thus luxurious camping in a cabin that we’re doing lol). My workout schedule is working really well for me, I’m surprised how easily I’m making the switch to evening workouts in preparation for when I start teaching. Guess it really is just habit now!

Thanks Heidi! I’m very lucky that we don’t have that conflict or stress – instead we have kids that have the benefit of lots of parental involvement. I’m so happy to have this situation & I’m really looking forward to the vacation 🙂

Thanks Trish! I’m really excited about our vacation 🙂 And it feels so good to be working out so regularly – it’s just habit at this point which is awesome 🙂

I hope you have an awesome time camping! It’s great that you guys have that sort of relationship where you can get along and consider each other family. You don’t see that very often and it’s a shame.

Thanks Michelle! I know it really is unfortunate, especially from my vantage point of how great it is. You have another set of parents to help make decisions and share frustrations & expenses. And the kids have this big family supporting them – all which would be lost if we couldn’t get along. I’m very lucky 🙂

I hope you have a lovely time with your family and extended family! I totally know where you are coming from, I went to Australia many years ago on holiday with my now husband, his mum and stepdad to stay with his dad, his dad’s new partner and his two half-sisters.

We all get on fabulously and my kids have three sets of grandparents!

That’s awesome Heather! I wish I heard about more families like ours & yours – to me it’s a much healthier and happier environment, especially for the kids! We’re the lucky few 🙂

I’m so excited that you’re getting a vacation – and getting to do things you love while on vacation, Berls! That’s wonderful!! AND I’m going to see you before you go because I’m going to be in Dallas. Although it’s not really a vacation when I’m traveling to a place where the daily lows are higher than my highs at home. :/ Dallas in July! Ugh! Good thing Texas knows how to do air conditioning. 😉 Yay for your new exercising schedule too. Are you liking Zumba? I did it for awhile – I laughed at myself more than I danced. *haha* See you soon!

Thanks Brandee! I’m so excited that you’re in town before I leave, what a bummer that would have been if you were only here while I was gone! It’s too funny, I don’t hardly think about the heat – I just enjoy it. Guess I’m a Texan huh? Lol! We do have air-conditioning everywhere though, so that could be why it doesn’t phase me. I’m LOVING zumba. I totally laugh at myself when I mess up, but I don’t suck as much as I thought I would. I did an hour and 45 minute class last night – do challenging, but a blast 🙂 can’t wait to see you! Where in Dallas are you staying?

Lol yep, you’re very good at unconventional 😉 I plan to take tons of pictures and share them – hopefully I get some good ones!

Thanks Angie 🙂 Me too – it’s great because I don’t have the stress of dealing with an vicious ex. Plus it’s good for the kids – having four people who love you and are watching out for you is better than just two. Although I think they’d disagree when they get into trouble lol!

    • Berls
      Twitter:

Lol I agree it’s luxury camping 🙂 but we’re first timers, plus it was cheaper this way since we’d have had the buy a couple tents, so it made sense. Depending on how it goes, we may try tent camping in the future.

Sounds like the perfect vacation. Reminds me of when I was younger and everyone went to the fishing resort in WI. We had family, friends and hangers-on, and it was terrific. If you complained about anything, that chore became yours for the rest of the trip. I still remember when everyone, and that was probably 10 people, salted the soup, and other than astonished looks at first bite, there were NO complaints! And the soup was finished. Ahhh, the good old days! To this day, we call that Wisconsin rule #1.

    • Berls
      Twitter:

I love that rule, we may just have to institute it on our trip. I’m really excited to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Plus getting the kids outdoors away from gaming, TVs and cell phones!

  5. Mariana

Hope you have a great time with the fancy camping trip, because to me is usually sleeping on tents. Sundays are horrible to me and it goes by super fast. Have a great week. XO

Thanks! We were originally going to do tent camping but this is actually cheaper since we don’t own a tent. Plus, we’re all newbies, so we figured we’d ease our way in 🙂

Happy blogoversary! Yay for you. It’s been too long since I’ve been by… hope you’re having a great summer. Your camping trip sounds fun- we just went a few weeks ago. I think it’s great you all go together. Love kayaking, just being on the water… have fun!!

Thanks Greg! Don’t worry – I’m doing horrible keeping up with visiting everyone, so I completely understand! I’m really excited for the camping trip – I just love being on/in/near water so that’s a big plus 🙂

  7. A Voracious Reader

I’m an indifferent camper. I much prefer a cabin to a tent and a hotel over a cabin. LOL I hope you have fun! And who says your family unit is weird? I don’t believe in the tag “normal” because everyone (an their situation) is unique. What works, works. 🙂

I totally agree Carol! We get a lot of comments from people though who can’t seem to understand that we spend so much time together and enjoy it. *shrugs* life’s too short to get bogged down by that shit! I’ve never been tent camping, but I would really like to try it. I’m super excited about the cabin though – I think it will be really nice 🙂

I hope you’ll enjoy your camping trip. I haven’t been on a real vacation since last year summer. I went camping twice in my life, but it’s not really for me. I prefer some more comfort when on vacation ;). I prefer going on vacation with my bf only, so that saves some money, but we haven’t had money for a longer vacation the last few years, we did go on a 5 day trip last year, but we’re not going anywhere this year. So I am living vicariously through everyone else their vacations ;). I love hiking and being around nature! Sounds like you are going to have a great vacation :). I hope you’ll have a great week and an amazing vacation!

I’ve been once, but it was a group retreat, so it didn’t really count in my mind. Too structured and with a bunch of strangers. I’m super excited!

I hope you have a more low joy weekend and get to participate next week!

Thanks Jonetta 🙂 I think we’ll have a great time. We, his ex and I, are going shopping Wednesday to get all the grocery items we need and some fun water things, like inner tubes. I’m so excited 🙂
