February 15, 2015 Sunday Post 35

Welcome to the 74th Edition of My Sunday Post!
Sunday Post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Basically it’s a chance to talk about the books you bought, borrowed, blogged about, and read for the week and what’s coming in the week ahead – and then share them with a much wider blogging community. Check out the details here.

News at Home

Last week was another crazy busy week! I can’t remember what I did on Monday… except my taxes, which we don’t want to talk about, okay?

But Tuesday I had book club and, as usual, it was a lot of fun. My friend, Jaime, has started joining me at book club and it’s been a real bonus since it means we get to see each other that much more! Tuesday I also FINALLY got my approval to observe at one of the school districts for my teacher certification – that made Wednesday – Friday CRAZY busy.

Wednesday (after my morning jog) I went to water aerobics with my mom, like usual. As I was jumping around – because I push myself HARD in these classes (want to get the most out of them) – I landed and felt this intense pain go through my left foot. Now that foot has been bothering me for about 3 weeks (4 now I guess), but I shrugged it off as a bruise and pushed through the pain. But whatever happened Wednesday was the straw the broke the camel’s back… or more likely, made the stress fracture worse. I haven’t been to a doctor because:

  1. From what I’ve read all they can do for a stress fracture is have you stay off it, elevate it, and ice it frequently.
  2. I have insurance, but it’s the one provided by my school – AKA, crappy insurance – and the XRAYs and, more likely, MRI would cost more than I can afford right now.

So I’m not 100% it’s a stress fracture, but everything I’ve read suggests it’s highly likely, especially since I’m an overweight runner. Blah. So I have to try and stay off it as much as possible the next 6 weeks.

I didn’t do too good with that this week, because after the gym Wednesday we had to get groceries and then I headed to my friend’s house to stay the night with them so I go to work with her husband (also my friend LOL) and observe him in the classroom Thursday and Friday. They live kind of far, so it was easier to stay with them. It was really enjoyable and I’m starting to think I might want to reconsider and get my certification to teach high school after all. He teaches high school Geometry and PreCalculus and the kids were great (though sometimes I had a hard time not laughing when they misbehaved – it was kinda hilarious and I have to figure out how I’ll deal with that…)

So I was on my feet a decent amount Wednesday – Friday. Friday, when I got home from observing, my BF and I decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day so we could stay home and be super lazy Saturday. We went to dinner at this new-to-us place called “Seafood” LOL! It’s a whole in the wall family restaurant we stumbled upon and it was fantastic! Not only was the food good, but everyone was so friendly – so much fun, we’ll definitely be back.

By time we got home, though, my foot was throbbing – whether I was on it or not. So I spent the entire night tossing and turning in pain and all day Saturday pretty much with my foot up and putting ice on it. It’s not so swollen now and it doesn’t hurt as bad, but I’m going to try and take it easy as possible.

Blog News

I spent a good portion of this week trying to remove all connections between my “real life” identity and my “blog” identity. Basically I just don’t want to take a chance of someone Googling my name and coming up to one of the few erotica reviews I have and having that person be a principal considering hiring me. But I also don’t want to stop reading and reviewing whatever I like. I’m still working on it – I’m cleaning up social media right now, but the blog is clean.

Round one of Murder at the Reinhart wrapped up and we announced the winner yesterday – Congratulations again to Lynn! Come back tomorrow and Tuesday to read and vote for round two contestants CC Dragon and Colleen Helme!

#FitReaders Update

Because of the maybe stress fracture, I’m altering my goals a bit. I’m aiming for 5000 steps a day OR 1 hour of physical activity (going to start swimming laps for a while I think) average per day.

Average steps: 9128 steps/day No wonder my foot hurts, I pushed too hard for having an injury these past few weeks :/
Days counting calories: 7! Woo-hoo! Finally back on track!
Book budget money earned: $2.00

Thanks – I’m trying. Its so hard, I’m a very active person! I didn’t realize how active until I decided to try and sit still LOL

  1. Bookworm Brandee

I’m sorry to hear about your foot, Berls. And I’m worried too. This happened to my mom and it went misdiagnosed for awhile. She ended up having to have surgery to put a plate on the bone she’d broken. Of course, she’s 40 years older than you…

I giggled over you thinking your friend’s class misbehaving was funny. I think you’d probably feel differently if you were the one up in front of the class? And if I were going to teach, it’d definitely be the HS level. But that’s just me. 🙂

I can’t imagine how much work it is to separate yourself and your alter-ego. I’ve considered doing it since when I started, it didn’t occur to me to not tie my name to everything. I don’t know if I could do it at this point.

Congrats on your win. And I love the covers of those books you hauled in. Gorgeous!

I hope your foot is feeling better! And that you’re having a great week! 84 more days til RT!! Woohoo!

I’m really hoping it’ll heal up well & fast – but if I don’t feel significantly better in two weeks, I’ll go to the doctor.

I think I probably would feel differs if I were the teacher, but holy crap they were hilarious! Such big personalities. I enjoyed high school a lot, but after 1 day in middle school I think that’s where I belong. I like that age for some weird reason… Crazy, I know.

Squee! RT will be here before we know it!

    • Berls

I WAS doing well from like March – November. I need to stop and get back on track!

Thanks – trying to stay off foot, but I’m so active! I didn’t realize how hard it would be for me to just sit still…

  2. Elsi @ Reading in Texas

For over 10 years, I kept my online life (genealogy, books, blogging) completely separate from my professional life (IT Consultant). I still keep a bit of space between the two, but Facebook has somewhat blurred the line. I chose not to have two Facebook accounts, so now the “Elsi” of my online presence and the “L. C.” of my professional life are a little bit closer. I applaud you in wanting to keep your professional presence separate.

And … swimming is an excellent way to keep the weight off your foot while it is healing.

Good luck with the teacher preparation. My daughter teaches math. Five years at the high school level and this year in middle school with 5th and 6th graders.

Oh I’d be interested to know how she feels making that switch. I just observed middle school today and Im thinking that as much as I like high school, middle school is more my fit.

Social media makes it very hard to keep things separate. I created a second FB account and I’m just working on clearing out the one with my real name.

Hope you’re having a great week!

    • Berls

Thanks Rachel – I’m trying. Its hard because, like you said, I love running. And I have a metabolic disorder that makes it super hard for me to lose weight, so losing my chief form of exercise is tough. So far I’ve managed not to gain, which is super exciting. Hope you’re having a great week!

  3. Stormi

I hope your foot gets to feeling better! I almost picked up those books but I refrained cause I got to mystery That doesn’t mean I can restrain myself for very 😉

  4. Katherine

I’m sorry to hear about your foot. I had a stress fracture in the ball of my foot because I used to wear heels all the time and it does sound exactly like what you’re describing. Ice and rest are definitely the way to go. Have you tried wrapping it? Like with an ace bandage or a brace? Sometimes compression can help though I’m in no way a doctor I’ve just a lot of damage to my feet over time 🙂 Hope it gets feeling better soon. Good luck with the removing blog/real life connection. I think it sounds challenging but probably a good idea with the job hunting. Have a great week!

I haven’t tried wrapping it, but that’s a good idea – I’ll get some ace bandage and try that this weekend!

  5. Red Iza

Oh, I’m so sorry for you foot 🙁 It’s a pity that medical care is so expensive, that’s why I put up making an appointment with the doc for my own feet – but now, I have to… I’m looking forward to your review on White trash zombie, I’m a fan of Diana Rowland’s Kara Gillian series. Take good care of yourself, I hope your foot will mend soon 🙂

Thanks Samantha! It’s already feeling much better – though it does protest when I spend too much time on it, so I’m trying to be diligent about staying off of it. I really enjoyed White Trash Zombie, I definitely recommend you read it soon 😀 Hope you’ve had a great week!

  6. Greg

Sorry to hear about your foot, take it easy and feel better. I had to laugh at your comment about high school, i think I wouls secretly want to laugh at times too at their antics, since I remember high school like that. 🙂 And like I commented over at Stormi’s blog, I think your Reinhart event was the funnest (yeah- not a word) blog thing I saw last week. Good job you guys! Looking forward to round 2.

Yay!! I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying Murder at the Reinharrt! Stormi and I were really nervous when we were putting it together because it is so different from anything we’ve seen, so I’m glad everyone is enjoying our crazy idea 🙂

The high school kids were freaking hilarious and it’s hard when you’re supposed to be the adult that doesn’t encourage them. I mean, at times laughing is okay because that’s just a fun, positive environment – but at other times, you really have to shut it down. Oh well, I guess that will be one of my challenges. Could be worse! Hope you had a great week Greg!

  7. Jenna

My husband is a teacher so I’ve always been really careful to keep my online and personal lives separate. I don’t post pictures of myself — or him, I only use my last name when I have to (like to get book mail), and I keep online and real life friends and family on separate accounts.

I need to do our taxes soon. I was going to do it today but I haven’t been feeling well so I’ve barely done any blogging the past week. I’m going to use today to catch up and then maybe do the taxes next week.

  8. Lola

Ugh I certainly don’t want to talk about taxes, I still have to do taxes from last year for Lola’s Blog Tours next time my mom visits. I hardly know anything about it and it’s all so complicated and I am starting to believe my mom doens’t know everything either.

When somethginhealth related is wrong I always try to google it myself first, no need to go to the doctor if he/she can’t do much more then tell you what you alreayd know. Ofcourse it’s never as good as a real diagnoses, but sometimes it will do. And health costs can get really high real quickly. I hope your feet will recover soon as it sounds really nasty and not putting weight on your feet is easier said then done. My mom once had a surgery for her foot and you could tell how diffficult it was for her to not stand on that foot.

I am looking forward to the next round of Murder at Reinhart, I really am enjoying the event so far :). Hope you have a great week!

My poor friend! Elevate, ice and rest! That is what you need (I already texted you that) 😉 I hope it feels better soon!

I am so happy for you with all the Teaching stuff and class visits you are having. I think you will fit perfectly in the HS setting. You are awesome and those kids are going to LOVE you!

We really need a chat day soon, so much to catch up on 🙂

Have a great week Kim! <3

Ouch, that injury sounds painful and having an enforced break from exercise is frustrating. But with these things rest really is the best medicine.
Glad you had fun at your observations! And you made me think about my identity too, I want to create more distance too just from a security pov.

  11. Ramona

Oh, ducks! First off, congrats on getting your approval to observe. Secondly, if you’re still thinking how to deal with high-school students misbehaving, the rule of the thumb is, do not be their friend – be their educator. It’s what an old teacher of mine always used to say 🙂 Most importantly, I’m so sorry for your foot, Berls! I do what you’ve done so often, aka pushing myself too hard, so I’m familiar with the temptation and the aftermath (even now I’ve got an injury in my neck from aerobics, lol!) Take it easy – although I get that easy doesn’t come easily to you 😀 Have a good Sunday! Hugs

  12. Lexxie

*ugh* I hope you’re right about your foot, Berls, and you also really need to stay off it! I know you know this already, but you have to actually do it 😉

It’s good that you’re making the link between personal / professional you and blogging you distinct. I have had that separation in place ever since I started blogging, because I already had an online identity when I got my blog. I also don’t want any of my students googling me and finding those erotica reviews 😉 As a side-note, one of my son’s teachers has a youtube channel, and of course the kids have been googling her, and they found it. He says she seems really lame because her channel is all her singing songs she likes. I don’t want to give my students any ammunition, you know?

I hope the observations are over, and that you’ll ace your certification exams, Berls! I look forward to comparing notes with you in May 🙂

Have a great week, happy reading, and STAY OFF that foot 😉 *hugs*
