Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren't for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.
Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta's magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings - and the death of Kate's guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she's way out of her league - but she wouldn't have it any other way.

Sometimes I’ve heard so many good things about a book/series that I’m AFRAID to read it. On one hand, I’m excited, but I’m also nervous that I’ll be the ONE person who just doesn’t love it. That was how I felt when I finally picked up Magic Bites. About two years ago. And then quit it, about two chapters in.

It wasn’t bad, but it was an audiobook I checked out from the library and I was having technical difficulties. And finally, I just gave up. And I wasn’t chomping at the bits to pick it back up. But then Jessica @ Rabid Reads raves about Ilona Andrews and I know I tend to love what she loves. So, when Magic Bites was on sale at Tantor for just $5, I tried again.

And… I’m not BLOWN AWAY but I definitely enjoyed Magic Bites enough to kick myself for taking so long to read it. For me, a really great UF must have two things:

  1. A main character worth loving, with serious kick butt potential (usually means they have room for growth, even if they have some power.
  2. A solid world build, with complex but understandable power systems (both magical & secular)

Magic Bites had both and then some. I love Kate Daniels – she’s fiercely independent, a bit snarky, and a lot of kick ass – with major potential.

The world is fantastic! I still have lots of questions – but nothing that kept me from enjoying Magic Bites. I love the conflict between Tech & Magic – the world fluctuates between tech being on (and disrupting magic) & vice versa – but I also struggled to fully comprehend what happened and exactly how that conflict came about. It’s something that is mentioned often enough that I’m not convinced I didn’t miss it. But, like I said, I understood well enough to grasp the major facets of this world.

I feel like there’s HUGE space for a bigger story to play out and I’m excited to see how that will happen as the story progresses. I’m really glad I grabbed the next few books in the Tantor sale, because Renรฉe Raudman was fantastic. She really brought the characters to life and gave them distinct voices to match their personalities. My only complaint would be the playback speed, something easily fixed if you have a player that let’s you increase playback speeds. Mine doesn’t unfortunately. Just the same, I’ll gladly be listening to the rest!

About Ilona Andrews

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. author2smโ€œIlona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

Yay! I’m glad you enjoyed your intro into Kate and Curran’s world. I don’t know if you read/listened to any more in the series yet BUT they just get better!! This is one of my favorite series of all time and I think it’ll end up being one of yours too, once you get further into it. Kate is just so awesome! Oh, and Curran is pretty fabulous, too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Growing pains, and book 1’s in an Urban Fantasy series go hand-in-hand. I didn’t LOVE this one either when I first listened to it because there’s just SO much world-building, but the installments get better as you go, plus to get a feel for the universe. Renรฉe Raudman kills it as the narrator too. Pick-up Magic Burns ASAP, and see for yourself.
