Visiting blogs during this past week’s MY TBR list I stumbled across this Book of the Year Challenge and a new-to-me blog, Erratic Project Junkie (Gah! I love that name!). So I’m way late joining this – but I’m making it in by, oh ONE HOUR. And I’m so glad because this is such a fun way to decide on my favorite book of the year.
Bracket and Round 1
I was supposed to reveal my bracket before today, but since I’m late I’m combining my bracket and round 1 into one post. The way I chose books is fairly simple and very scientific. I went through my Goodreads and wrote down every book I read last year that got a 4 star rating or above. That turned out to be 84 books (so a good year – though I did read like 145 books), which was a few too many for my 64 slot bracket. I thought about combining books from the same series but that brought me down to an awkward number and I didn’t really like it anyway.
So here’s where the science came in…
I went to my bracket and started filling it in, with the first book on the list against the last book on the list. How did I decide which books to cut? Well if I got to a book on the list and felt underwhelemed about writing it in, it got cut. Scientific right? LOL!
I also had limited space for titles. So sometimes that first book against last book thing didn’t work out. I definitely moved titles around so that the short titles got put in the smaller spots and the big titles got put in the bigger spots. Again, super scientific of me! 😉
As I did this, there were definitely times where I cried a little inwardly because I knew a pairing was going to result in the death of a book in the bracket. (BTW – I’m picking the winner based on which I feel like I liked better at this moment, not on their rating) And even though I liked the one that would win more, it made me sad. But I didn’t want to mess with my super scientific method, so I let said books die in round one. Anyway, that’s my method… You ready to see the books?
The original bracket titles are in black, round 1 titles (so the winners) are in blue. There are some abbreviations, but I figure if the book wins enough it will eventually earn more of it’s title back because of space LOL. Round 2, where I’ll have to make some cuts I don’t even want to think about, will be up on January 8th.
Anyway, this is so fun and you should totally go check out the other participants in the linky at Erratic Project Junkie.
Any predictions for the next round? Surprises from round one?
