Every couple of months Michelle @ Because Reading and I take a look at our very long To Be Read shelves and select a book that we both want to read. And then we read it and chat about it. We’ve changed it up a bit to make it simpler. Instead of a lengthy chat, we’re interviewing each other on our respective blogs and asking – Was it good for you?
Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter
As my review for Alice in Zombieland yesterday indicated, it took a bit of pushing for me to pick up the book – and then it took me a bit to get into. At the end, I did like it, but I didn’t love it. And I’m in no hurry to grab the next book. Michelle on the other hand already bought and downloaded the next two! Let’s see what made her like it SO MUCH, shall we?
For me, the most confusing thing about Alice in Zombieland was trying to figure out how far to go with the comparisons to Alice in Wonderland. You’re a Wonderland expert, though – I’m not. What do you think about linking the two stories?
I know it had no link but you did get hints of Alice in Wonderland. I don’t think the two stories are linked per say but she does include somethings. For Example you can say that Kat was the Cheshire Cat and Cole was the Mad Hatter, The Zombies were the cards and at some point we will meet the Evil Queen. Maybe Dr Wright?
See! You saw way more comparisons than I did! I totally buy your allusions too – they work! So – What did you think about the zombie mythology?
I do agree with you that it took a long time to get to it and I wanted it all to be given at one time. But I did like the entire concept of it all. Such a different take I really liked it.
I agree 100%. What about the characters? Alice/Ali? Cole? Kat?
I really enjoyed all of them, Cole needs to lighten up a bit and they totally need more Kat she was so super cute. Ali I was good with I felt bad for her but I thought she was a strong character. Even everyone else in the story I liked.
Ha! Yeah Cole really does need to take a chill pill. Sounds like you liked Ali more than I did, though. And the romance between Ali and Cole?
Again I liked it, I thought he had the mystery to him and I like guys like that. He is very protective of her and you can really tell he cares. I found them having a good amount of chemistry and really enjoyed them. I am looking forward to seeing there relationship grow in the next 2 books (if it grows)
Hmm I hadn’t thought of Cole that way, maybe I like their relationship *a bit* better in that light. I listened to Alice in Zombieland – you did a bit of both listening and reading right? What did you think of Natalie Gold’s narration?
I listened to a good amount of this book and only read when I couldn’t listen that much, If I had to read the entire book I might have bailed due to the slow progress of the zombie telling and she is a bit over descriptive. I really liked Natalie Gold and she lacked a little emotion and read really slow but on 1.5x speed I was good. I did buy the next two in Audio just because her voice is now what I associate to Alice and can’t get that voice in my head if I read it.
If you’ve read Alice in Zombieland I’d love to know – Was it good for you?
