I thought it was a great idea so Pinching Pennies is my version of being trying to be responsible when purchasing books. And a big thanks to Michelle @ Because Reading is better than real life for designing my button!

September 2014’s Goal

This year has been an experiment in book budgeting. I started the year thinking I would try to spend less than $500 a year on books. Then in March, I decided to switch my goal to $30 or less a month.

This past month I learned why people have yearly goals, rather than monthly goals – I’ve had months where I stay way under $30 and then this month happened and well, I don’t know the total yet, but I feel really confident that I went WAY OVER $30. So I went back over my Pinching Pennies posts for the year and calculated a yearly goal, trying to go back to my original goal of $500. Maybe with that adjustment I’ll be in target?

Yearly goal = $500
Spent so far this year = $179.44
Remaining (before September 2014) = 320.56

End Results

So I spent a lot this month and expect to spend a lot next month… but I think I can make it within budget. I hope!

One thing’s for sure, after this year’s trial and error, I’m making plans to super reduce my budget next year (and stick to it!)

Updated Totals

Yearly goal = $500
Spent so far this year = $179.44 + 153.46 = 332.90
Remaining (after September 2014) = $167.10

Do you keep a book budget?

How’d you do in September 2014?

Thanks Bea! So as I predicted October was an expensive month too! I’m out of money for the year – but that’s a good thing (or so I tell myself) because it means that I HAVE to learn to say no to books and read what I already have (or can borrow). Let’s see how I do!

You got a lot of awesome looking books this month! All those new releases can be so hard to resist sometimes. I didn’t spend much during september as I am still struggling with money issues, maybe if the next few months go well I can buy a few books again.

And it’s awesome you won so many books, it’s always so exciting when you win a book giveaway!

I just wanted to compliment you on your budged till October, and then well. I mean I still have faith that you’ll stay under the budget, but honestly you bought some amazing books so I totally understand. But it’s a good thing I don’t like audiobooks, that seems to be an addiction 😀 Great post 🙂

I think after this month I’m out – but I obviously don’t need any more books either lol! If I can make it from now until January 1st without spending any money, then maybe I can get into a good habit for the new year. Maybe? I have a problem…

You may have gone over budget this month, but you are on track for the year and you did get some fantastic titles. I haven’t had much trouble tightening up my belt because I find I am always drowning in ARCS and requests and I rarely have time to read what I want, which is a good and bad thing. No point in buying a bunch of books if I can’t get to them right away. Good luck next month.

See, that is the way I need to approach book buying! I see books that I want to read and then they’re on sale and suddenly I find myself having to buy them – even when I have oodles to read already! But after this month – just had a bunch of author signings last week and spent the rest of my budget… – I’m going to have to learn restraint. It will be good for me 😀

Wow, you got a ton of great books from Audible! I would so love to take advantage of Audible, but it isn’t in the cards right now, so I borrow my audiobooks from the library.

I’ve gone really overboard recently on Kindle bargain books, but the big expense this month is Kindle copies of Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus books, which I promised my daughter I would read.

I need to stop buying so many! I’m down to two credits to last me until March though, so maybe I’ll learn to reign it in? Cross your fingers for me!

Enjoy the Rick Riordan books, I have enjoyed them – though I haven’t made it past Mark of Athena. I read all those before I started blogging and just kind of forgot about them. But I’ve been reminded a few times lately, making me think it’s time to grab the last couple!

I’m happy to see that you’ve gotten back to blogging, Kimberly. I’ve missed your posts! Those pesky Audible sales have a way of making me bust my book buying budget. I mean, just yesterday I got an e-mail from them about their ‘discover a new series’ promo, and couldn’t resist grabbing the first two Dresden Files audios. Oops, I probably shouldn’t have told you about their latest deal. Hehe! 😉

Thanks! It’s good to be back! Things go so crazy with my mom moving in, but we’re settled now 🙂

OMG those audible sales kill me. I actually have managed to resist this one – mainly because I already spent way too much on books at a couple of author signing events this past week. But it’s still so tempting!

Audiobook sales are the hardest for me to resist because audibooks are typically so darn expensive! I don’t know that I’ll ever master it – but I figure if I’m trying to keep track, I’m still doing better than I was last year at this time, when I just bought books if there was money in the bank for them. That was bad!

Yes, they are! And for my favorite series I just HAVE to have them :/ I bought a few more this month at author signings, but that’s it for the year. No more!!

Oh and thanks about the banner – Michelle did it of course 🙂
