Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Jessi @ Novel Heartbeat. Each week Jessi chooses a topic (scheduled in advance) that’s not book related so we that we can get to know our fellow bloggers better – and to know more about them than just books. I’m thrilled to join in and I hope to participate every week from here on out. I hope you’ll join in too – check out the details here!

This week’s topic: Quirks

I’m sure I have quirks. Everyone has quirks, right? See the thing is, I’m not sure I think of them as quirks because to me, they’re normal things I do. So I asked my brother… “Phil, do I have any quirks?”

Since I called him at 10:00am on a Sunday to ask that question I got voicemail instead. I imagined if he had answered I would have gotten a resounding, “Huh?” followed by some grumbling about how my most annoying quirk is calling him way too damn early. LOL! I wake up early and that particular day I’d already been up for several hours. Without an alarm.

Anyway, in a later conversation he told me my clumsiness was my quirk. Yeah, I a special sort of clumsy. 🙂

But our imaginary conversation did get me thinking. Maybe instead of trying to figure out my quirks I should think of the things I do that my brother regularly comments on, gets annoyed by or laughs at. Here’s what I came up with:

  1. I tend to correct incorrect grammar. It really bothers me, sorry. Wait, I’m so not sorry.
  2. I don’t like Apple/MAC. It’s not the product that bothers me, it’s the mentality that goes with it (a lot of the time). I won’t explain because if you love the company you won’t understand what I’m saying. And if you don’t, you already know what I’m saying. And I say this without any mean intent.
  3. I like to drink from a straw. I have so many cups with straws and I’m always carrying one with me. Always.
  4. I’m a drama queen and own it. I overreact and make things into a big deal at times. Oh well, we all have faults and I take pride in owning mine. My brother says I’m a bit dramatic in my ownership of being a drama queen. LOL. What can I say? It’s me 🙂
  5. I get really super passionate about causes. This goes hand in hand with being a drama queen probably. But I’m really passionate about LGBT Rights, Marriage Equality, Animal Rights, etc.
  6. I have lots of reading quirks… I have to read a series in the same format I started it – audio, hardback, paperback. If the first read was a library book, it has to stay a library series. If I owned the first book, I can’t go to the library for the next one. That’s probably my weirdest quirk.

That’s all I could come up with. And I’m not really sure that anything on that list is technically a quirk. But that’s me, in all my quirkiness 🙂

What are your quirks?

I do #1 too! I’m the asshole that takes pictures of the grammar mistakes around my workplace. I like to collect them…for what, I don’t really know lol. Maybe I’ll make a “bad grammar” compilation someday, who knows.
I used to feel that way about Mac/Apple. I used to HATE when I was forced to use the Macintosh desktops at school. I refused to use anything but PC. Then I won an iPod Nano, and fell in love with it. I always said I’d never get an iPhone, but when I got an iPod touch, which is basically an iPhone without service, I again fell in love and I’ve had Apple products ever since. I would never, ever, go back, but I definitely understand what you’re saying!
While I don’t stick with library books or hardcovers vs. paperbacks, I do tend to stick with audio if that’s what I started with. Mainly Moira Young’s series, because it’s better in audio. The prose is a nightmare to look at but it sounds good!

Hehe a bad grammar compilation would be really fun actually – some of them can be quite funny! It seems that a lot of people really like Mac/Apple when they switch for some reason, but I can’t see myself even considering it. I know how to use their products when I have to, but I just don’t like the company and the mentality they try to breed. And I really wish Apple & Windows didn’t have to be SO Different! Why can’t they be 100% compatible? That gives me issues with both companies!

I correct grammar (and punctuation, spelling, and syntax) all the time – mostly when it’s in print, especially from sources that ought to know better (like CNN or a newspaper or book. I’m a little more forgiving of blogs and quickly dashed-off emails!) The use of the apostrophe in non-possessive plurals drives me up the wall. I try not to correct real live people when they’re speaking unless they’re my child or my spouse, but every now and then it just bursts out. Hey, I was an English teacher!

Other quirks of mine… I have to read a little before I go to bed, or I can’t unwind. I burst into song at the drop of a hat. And I really hate being wrong – though I’ve gotten a little better about that as I’ve gotten older.

I’m pickier about written grammar too. I’m very forgiving of blog posts, comments, and quick emails because I know that typos and brain to keyboard malfunctions happen all the time. But in published sources like books and newspapers, I found it really annoying. The possessives thing bothers me to, particularly with it’s and its since I feel like that’s one you should have ground into you. Oh and they’re, their, and there. Gah! I’m not saying I never mess this up myself, because I’ve caught my mistakes in blog posts before, but when it’s over and over it really gets me.

I totally share #1 and #3! I’m constantly correcting people. I also correct my mom’s pronunciation. English isn’t her first language, and sometimes her accent just gets in the way, but I have to correct her anyway!

Straws! We have a ridiculous amount of straws on hand, since I don’t like my mouth touching glass, bottles, or cans. I use to have a nice collection of reusable straws, but those things are a pain to keep clean!

I have a bunch of reusable straws! They are a pain to keep clean, but I think easier if (like me) you wash dishes by hand. I actually have a straw cleaner since I have so many cups with straws. I’ve moved so many times and every time my BF tries to get rid of some of my cups with straws but I won’t let them go! I need them 🙂

I did wash my straws by hand, but…*lazy* A straw cleaner! That is what I need! I didn’t even know that existed.

LOL I probably should have had this on my list of quirks. I’m a bit OCD about cleaning and organizing things 😉 But I’m also really green so I didn’t want tons of disposable straws. So I searched the internet and I have these. They’re cheap and work great 🙂

OMG! I totally have like half of those same quirks. I seriously thought I was the only one who had to keep with the original format for a series. If I come to a place in one of my series that I was reading from the library and the library doesn’t have the next book I freak. I usually either buy the missing book and donate it to the library so that others do not suffer the same problem or I start over and buy the whole series. In fact, the only one of “your” quirks that I don’t have is straws. I hate straws, especially when I’m drinking water. I have a really hard time finding strawless reusable bottles. Everyone laughs at me because I have gotten some crazy bottles, like an orange one with peace signs.

LOL Alana, we just might be kindred spirits 😉 I have donated books to the library too, for the same reason! I could have sworn I was the only one who does that. The only times I can make exceptions are with novellas, since they are often only ebooks.

I just started being willing to read books out of order, but it’s really hard and I have to have a good reason. Oh and I promise, I’m the good kind of drama – never liked to cause trouble or anything. Just dramatic reactions. 🙂

I struggle with grammar, and no matter how often I edit I miss things, so I ignore them in blogs even if I spot them. I do notice them in books and it can make me crazy, but I expect them to have hired professional editors. We prefer android and are not Apple people. Unless I am at a restaurant no straw is needed but do not give me a plastic or metal cup..eew! Only glass or ceramic. Even my to go coffee cup is ceramic. :snort: I handle everything calmly..but if I freak it is best to run. I am passionate about things I love, or causes as well. Uh book quirks..that list is too long to get into ..LOL

I agree – quirkiness is what makes us unique 🙂 LOL I was kind of surprised that all my brother said was that I was clumsy, I thought he’d give me way better material. I guess he was feeling generous.

LOL Carmel – so are my mom, my brother, and the vast majority of my friends. So I clearly still love the iPhone users, just not the company 😉 I have a friend who fold all her shirts and pants like they’re on display in a department store because she worked retail for years. So you’re not alone in feeling those effects!

I speak hillbilly, so you’ll would go crazy correcting my grammar. It some times comes out in my writing..lol. My mom use to laugh when she would read something I wrote..cause I would write it how I talk..everthing instead of everything. 🙂

Your last quirk I can really understand because if I start a series on audio I have to finish it on audio..I am not as bad as you when it comes to the other parts but if I own the first book I have to purchase the rest as well but I do have some series that are half ebook and half print though that does bug me a bit..LOL. 🙂

LOL Stormi- I can handle dialects a lot better than plain old bad grammar. In fact, I kind of think of dialects (which hillbilly is IMHO) as a language with a grammar all their own. It’s things like they’re, their, and there that really got on my nerves in writing or using the wrong word when speaking. So it probably wouldn’t be so bad, though I might not understand you 😉

I lent out a paperback to my favorite series once because I really wanted my friend to read it. I still haven’t gotten it back 🙁 so that’s why I don’t lend out. I try to be good to books, but I can’t say that they always look brand new since I do shove them in bags to carry with me and sometimes that gets them a bit bent in places.

I am constantly correcting my mom’s grammar and she hates it! But I can’t stop. If she makes a mistake, you’d think she’d want to know and improve, right? But apparently other people consider it rude. 😀 I get passionate about causes to at times, though I don’t think I’m very dramatic. At least, not when other people are around. Great post! 🙂

LOL exactly my thoughts too Jessica! Why would someone want to continue speaking (or writing) incorrectly? And I personally think that being passionate about causes is a great quirk! I mean, if you aren’t passionate about things that matter, what do you care about?

That last one is really interesting. I don’t have that problem though, but I imagine it can be tough sometimes. LOL for correcting grammar. I do that a lot, but in not when it comes to English. Serbian, on the other hand, is another story. Great post.
I’m trying to think of some quirks I have, but I can’t think of any. That’s strange. I’ll have to think about it.

I think it’s hard to come up with our own quirks because to us they aren’t that quirky. But once I put myself in my brother’s head, it got a lot easier 😉 The book thing can be a total pain, but I tried breaking it a couple times and the book just felt off to me until I switched back to the right medium. So I don’t mess with it anymore.
