Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Jessi @ Novel Heartbeat. Each week Jessi chooses a topic (scheduled in advance) that’s not book related so we that we can get to know our fellow bloggers better – and to know more about them than just books. I’m thrilled to join in and I hope to participate every week from here on out. I hope you’ll join in too – check out the details here!

This week’s topic: Favorite Outings

I like out-doorsy outings, though I we don’t get to do them very often. I love love love trips to the beach but since we don’t live close to one it’s been a few years since I made it to the beach. When I was a kid we lived really close to the finger lakes and a bunch of parks with swimming holes and waterfalls – I used to spend most my summer at those parks and I really miss it.

While I was living in St. Louis the zoo was a frequent outing for me because in St. Louis it was FREE! Yep! And it’s a really great zoo too. So we went several times. I don’t seem to have any pictures though. We spent a lot of time checking out wild cats and bears – they seem to be our favorite to watch.

Since we got our dog Buffy – going on two years now! – I’ve also really loved outings to the dog park. We really want to have another dog for her to play with, but since we live in smallish apartment that’s not really an option. So the dog park is a great way for her to play with other dogs outside. It’s kind of hit and miss, though. Partly because of my schedule but also because Buffy is hit and miss with how she acts. Sometimes we go and she has a bunch of fun. Other times I take her and she barks and barks and barks, and then hides behind me. I know it’s the people that are there she’s reacting to – no fault of theirs, but she does not like men. And she’s a territorial little yipper regardless. So it can be stressful to take her sometimes.

I’ve really gotten into doing 5ks lately too. I’m taking a bit of a hiatus for the summer – my next one isn’t until September and last one was early June – but I’ve done three so far this year and really really love them.

I think the only other outing I’m crazy about is an outing to the library or bookstore. Perhaps library better because I don’t leave broke πŸ˜‰

What are your favorite outings?

We don’t have a beach anywhere near us, either, which makes me sad because I LOVE the beach. A free zoo?! We need one of those around here!! The closest zoo to us is almost an hour and a half away, and I think it costs nearly $20 now to get in. Lame. Big cats are my fave!
I used to go to the Bark Park here a lot, but sadly I haven’t been in a very long time. We’re definitely overdue for a trip!

I wish I had a beach near me, but no luck πŸ™ Yes, the free zoo was awesome, though I do think we paid for it in state taxes, so I guess nothing is really free, right? I love big cats though!

I like outdoorsy stuff, too. I especially like gardening. However, haven’t done all that much lately since I hate the heat and it’s been too hot for NC the last few summers. The beach is always a good event. It’s less than 4 hours from us, so we try to go once a year, usually in Sept when it’s a bit cooler and less crowded. Yeah, I don’t like crowds. We used to go to the NC Zoo a couple times a year (it’s 45 minutes away), but now that the kids are older we don’t go as often. Though we try for at least once a year. Now that we have a granddaugter I see the zoo trips picking up again. πŸ™‚

I do miss skiing. And I used to golf, play on a co-ed softball team and my mom’s bowling team. I miss those activities too. Well, softball especially. I only ever golfed cuz it was fun with friends not because I was any good. Same with bowling. lol I miss bike riding, too. One of these days hubs and & need to get new bikes. Need money first though. Why does everything always boil down to money? *sigh* Oh, and it goes without saying, we love outings to bookstores. Especially when we have gift cards to spend. πŸ˜€

Since I’m mostly a homebody, I do enjoy my time with hubby every two weeks when we grocery shop and have our lunch date (to coincide with payday). I used to hate grocery shopping, but now that he goes with me at least it’s bearable. lol The occasional wrestling night out where we watch our friends wrestle in an Amateur League is also fun and something the kids enjoy, too. Then there is the occasional movie with the kids. Huh. I guess we do more than I thought. πŸ™‚

LOL sounds like you do quite a bit to me πŸ˜‰ You know, grocery shopping is one of my favorite outings because I go every Friday (leaving in a bit actually) with my mom and my brother. We have such a good time and it’s a day every week that I know I’ll get to spend with them. I used to hate it too, though. And bowling! I used to belong to a league and got pretty good – I still love it but if you don’t get the discounts you get from the league it gets super expensive πŸ™ Money…. wish I had it LOL

I’m not very outdoorsy either, but I think that’s really just because of where I live – because I WANT to do all sorts of outdoorsy things. We have lots of 5ks here, so that’s fun at least πŸ™‚ And yeah, just listening to your kids over the phone is an adventure LOL

I do volunteer work at the Columbus Zoo, so I spend a lot of time there. The family has a cabin in Canada where we go every summer. I love it because I can read a ton. In the winter I snowboard at our local hill in Ohio. Those are my normal things, but later this year I’m going to DC with my mom for a trip. It should be fun.

These are great posts. So fun to learn more about all my book loving friends.

Thanks Melanie – I love these posts too πŸ™‚ That’s so cool, I would LOVE to volunteer at a zoo. I have never been snowboarding but I used to love skiing. Don’t do much of that here in Texas though LOL

oh, I like this blogger’s life feature. Great idea! I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t done much outings lately. The last several years have been really rough so nothing big has really happened.

I started walking last year and got up to about 5 miles a day. I’ve slacked off, but want to pick it up again as it really helps “reset” my mind. It also lets me listen to audiobooks πŸ˜‰

Dog parks with the poochies…well mine are too old now, but that used to be a favorite of mine, too! Along with the beach! I tend to shy away from the suntanning and instead play in the water…which makes you even darker if you don’t have the right SPF! πŸ˜€

5 miles a day! Nice! I’m still working up to that – right now I average around 3-4 miles a day and that feels like an accomplishment πŸ™‚ And I’m totally with you at the beach – in the water the whole time. Although now I might want to spend a little more time on the beach reading, but probably not LOL
