Since June Is Audiobook Month – and you know that’s a BIG deal in my world – I couldn’t let it pass without a little celebration! So for the month of June, Saturday’s Fun Question Posts have been taken over by audiobook related themes. And I’ll be giving away ONE AUDIBLE AUDIOBOOK of your choice at the end of the month (see rafflecopter below to enter). This is open in the US & Canada only (since I don’t think you can get Audible books International).

Anyway, join me every Saturday as I ask a Fun Question (about audiobooks) that’s been on my mind. I’ll give you my take, but I really hope you’ll jump in with your answers too, since I’m really curious to know what my fellow readers and bloggers think! So today’s question is…

When do you listen?

When I first started listening to audiobooks I was really uninventive about when I’d listen. I pretty much only listened to audiobooks when I worked out. And since I’m not particularly fit that was about 30 minutes a day, tops. It took me forever to get through an audiobook and I had no idea all the opportunities to listen that I was missing! Now, any time that I can possibly listen to an audiobook (and couldn’t be reading a physical book) I’m listening to one.

In my typical day I get in several short bursts of listening totaling between 2 and 3 hours of listening. Now I work from home, so my routine is very different from a lot of people’s – I know that if I had a daily commute I would be listening to an audiobook during that time too! And some people have jobs that are really conducive to listening – I’m working on a dissertation, so that’s not, unfortunately. What I love about audiobooks is that you can listen to them when your doing so many things. I listen when I walk the dog (4 to 5 times day), when I go for a walk/jog, when I’m driving, cleaning, taking a shower, getting dressed for the day and cooking.

I obviously love audiobooks and now I’m giving you a chance to win one to try yourself! This giveaway will be running all month and you’ll have opportunities to earn extra entries with each Saturday Fun Question Post.

I usually have the TV on when I’m home, but I listen to audiobooks when I’m watering my plants outside. I get a lot of time in driving to and from work (~45 minutes each way) and when on my daily runs (8-10 miles/day). I listen to other things like podcasts, though, so I don’t listen to as many audiobooks as you would think.

I never got into podcasts, I think mainly because I never found an easy way to follow them. But sounds like you have a lot of listening time – Audiobooks or podcasts! I can’t imagine running 8-10 miles daily, I’m still proud of myself for hitting 3 miles a day!

For the most part I listen while I drive. Since my commute is 2-3 hours a day, depending on how bad the traffic is, I get a lot of good listening done. Sometimes I even listen at work if the day is slow and I have no meetings or interruptions while I’m crunching spreadsheets.

I’ve been known to grab my headphones and listen while my BF is sleeping too. My only problem with listening in bed is when I drift off and then I have a hard time figuring out when I fell asleep and getting to the right place to pick up the next day.

Well not being able to focus can be an issue – but if you pick your time and book right I think there’s the perfect combination out there for pretty much everyone. Hell, lay in bed and just close your eyes and drift away with the book. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done that – it’s even better than reading that way because you really lose yourself in the book. Just don’t fall asleep LOL 🙂

I’ve enjoyed reading all the ideas about where to listen. Currently, I listen when I’m doing rote work on the Internet/blog, but doesn’t work well if I end up reading a blog post or trying to comment…lol. I also do some crafting–making cards and scrapbooking mostly–and can usually listen, also while exercising, some housework (I don’t use headphones, but maybe I should!) My biggest problem is forgetting to listen when I’m doing something where I could listen.

What kind of bluetooth waterproof speaker did you get, Berls?

Wow, that’s quite the commute Traci! I’m so spoiled working from home – but that won’t last much longer, since I’m looking for a job (I’ve been a grad student…). I would sure love a job that let me listen at work, too. I think those gems are far and few between!

I haven’t really found a good time to listen to audio books but I really need too. I tried in the car but I so used to tuning out the kids that I found myself tuning the book out as well. I’m going to keep trying though. There are some great suggestions here!

I enjoy listening to audiobooks in the car, or when I’m doing housework (washing dishes, folding laundry, etc.) Sometimes I also listen when I want to knit and read at the same time — but I can’t do that if the knitting pattern is complex, because I can’t concentrate on both the pattern and the book at the same time. It’s great for relatively mindless knitting, though.

Oh I would end up with some very interesting creations if I tried to listen to an audiobook while knitting – I’m not very good and really need to concentrate when I knit. But I could do it while crocheting, I think. Audiobooks are just so great when you don’t really have to think about anything too much.

I couldn’t agree more! Though I don’t tend to listen to them before I go to bed actually! That’s the one time I don’t listen because I tend to fall asleep and lose my spot. I’ve tried putting a sleep timer on but I always over or underestimate how long it will take me to fall asleep.

I love that you’re able to listen with the kids and hope that y’all are able to keep the routine going in the summer! I haven’t been able to get my stepson into audio books 🙁 but maybe when we have kids and I get to start instilling my love of books from day 1.

I listen to them all the time now, when I am surfing the internet, cleaning, taking a shower (which I am glad to know I am not the only one that does that..lol), mowing the lawn, walking, etc. Basically any time I can fit one in. I have one on my computer that is different from the one on my phone so when I am on the go I am listening to a completely different one..so I normally have two going at once..sort of like how I read physical books I usually have two of those as well. 🙂

Hahaha! Yep, you’re so not alone with the shower! I struggled to listen for a while because it was hard to get enough volume over the sound of the shower. But this past christmas I got a bluetooth waterproof speaker for the shower and now I listen with no problem 🙂

My listening increased significantly after my husband got me a great set of wireless earphones for Christmas. Now I can listen while doing housework, including vacuuming! I listen whenever I can’t hold a book…driving, cooking, cleaning, walking/working out, rote work on my computer. The thing I love about it is I now can leverage this down time and have found a way to enjoy chores I used to hate to do. I’m in love with audiobooks.
