Life of a Blogger | Non-bookish hobbies

January 2, 2014 Life of a Blogger 32

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Jessi @ Novel Heartbeat. Each week Jessi chooses a topic (scheduled in advance) that’s not book related so we that we can get to know our fellow bloggers better – and to know more about them than just books. I’m thrilled to join in and I hope to participate every week from here on out. I hope you’ll join in too – check out the details here!

This week’s topic: Non-bookish hobbies

Not to be incredibly boring but I don’t have a whole lot of non-bookish hobbies. I don’t have a ton of free time and it’s pretty dominated by reading, writing, and blogging. However, I do love to play video games. I don’t play them often because I don’t have a great amount of self-control when it comes to games. I want to finish them once I begin them and pretty much shut down once I start. I’ve been known to play a video game from start to finish in one week – stopping only to eat, sleep a few hours, and use the restroom. No showers. No getting dressed. It’s THAT bad. Which is why I don’t allow myself to play them unless I’m on a school break. Some favorites include:

The one exception to that rule is for the Sims.Ā I’m a reformed Sims addict. In that I used to be just as bad with the Sims as with all video games, but now I can sit down every few weeks and play for a few hours and then not touch it again for several more weeks. If you haven’t played, you probably don’t get what’s so addicting about this game, but there’s something incredibly fun about playing out an ideal life or the life you’d never let yourself have because it’s dangerous, rebellious, or whatever. I currently own almost all the Sims 3 expansions and I’m keeping my eyes on the details about Sims 4 to see if I’ll be buying it.

Ultimately though, the XBOX 360 is off limits most the time and I often would rather read, write, or blog than play the Sims. So I’m a bit boring – I don’t spend much free time on anything besides bookish hobbies. Oh well, I guess I’m lucky to know what I love! What are your non-bookish hobbies?

Ohhh Dragon Age, I want to try that so bad! I love fantasy and dragons and RPGs are my favorite, so I’m sure I’d enjoy it. I need to start a list! ‘Course, then that’s something else for me to get addicted to…Skyrim sucks up enough of my time!

Dragon Age was really great – I played it back when Dallas shut down for a winterstorm back in like 2010 and pretty much stopped doing anything but sleeping and playing the game. I adore RPGs in general. Skyrim is one that I haven’t tried yet, but really want to – except I’m scared y’all will never see me again LOL!

I haven’t gotten the PS4 or Xbox One yet – I figure wait until they are cheaper and have a host of games I really want to play that are only available on those systems.

Skyrim is a game that I really want to play but just haven’t had a chance yet. My brother owns it, so I just need to find the time. He says it’s awesome and addicting, so I’m kind of nervous.

It really is a lot of fun – and about now you probably can pick it up SIMS 3 for relatively cheap, since SIMS 4 is coming out this year. Of course, it may be an addiction you want to avoid LOL

If the Sims has an AA meeting place, I’d go. I’ve purchase every single expansion of every single Sims game. I’ve purchased 6 of the stuff packs. Worse, I also purchased every single item in the Sims 3 Store as of October, which ended up being about $200 more dollars…and I bought the items at a discount. The last expansion pack I haven’t even installed. I don’t know why I bought it. Well, it was on sale at least.

I’ve also played quite a few MMORPGs. My gaming friends are constantly asking me to rejoin them in the latest game. Whatever one they’re playing now is in alpha still, so I’m staying away. When I get the gaming itch, I play Guild Wars 2. There’s no subscription, so I don’t feel guilty when I don’t play for weeks or months. I’m purposely not in a guild, so I don’t get too attached to the game.

Yeah…gaming has stolen many years and many dollars from my life. I get sucked in too easily. The only reason I haven’t gotten lost in Skyrim is because Xbox makes me nauseous if I play for more than a couple days in a row.

From the response to this post I’m starting to think we have the makings of a Sims AA group right here LOL! I could drop some serious change on the Sims (and have) though I’ve managed to not buy too much from the Sims store. I have several stuff packs and almost all of the expansions. I stopped buying them because they were getting really slow on my computer. I may need a new one before I can handle sims 4 šŸ™ It’s ok though, I plan to wait for the glitches to get worked out before I buy it anyway.

I haven’t played any MMORPGS – not because I don’t want to, but because I would never resurface. RPGS are dangerous enough for me. And that element and well, y’all would never hear from me again LOL

I don’t think I’ll ever be reformed when it comes to the Sims. I love the games way too much! I’m also going to keep an eye on 4, but I know it’s going to be glitchy as heck, so I want to wait for that to be sorted out before buying it. šŸ™‚

I agree – I’ll be waiting on Sims 4. I’m also waiting because so far I haven’t seen them release any details that make me want it that much more than Sims 3. And you know it’s going to be super expensive. At least then the other expansions I haven’t bought for sims 3 should be cheap LOL

      • Angie F.

Yeah, I haven’t seen anything special about it either. But I’m such an addict, that I must try it! I’m definitely looking forward to the price drops for TS3 since I only have three of the expansions! Must get my hands on the rest of them!

Which expansions do you have? I have all of them up to Resort. When I downloaded that one things got really slow, so I decided to wait on the others. Which I think is 2… not sure there’s so many!!

          • Angie F.

I have Supernatural, Ambitions, and Generations. Aren’t there like 10 or 11 of them now, plus like 2408480 stuff packs (I’m not even going to attempt to buy all of those. I did with 2 though.)?! I cannot wait for them to be cheaper, or a discounted box set or something!

There’s like a bazillion stuff packs – I don’t buy many of them because you can get a lot of the items from the expansions and they would overload my computer too much. Plus kill my wallet. Supernatural was only ok for me, but I think my expectations were a bit too high. I adore Generations and Ambitions though. And University was a great expansion to go with those – I totally recommend it as one of your next purchases šŸ™‚

I’ve always wanted to be a knitter (or crocheter) but every time I start a project I don’t finish. I think I need someone to teach me, because I only know the two most basic stitches and that gets boring (not to mention, I’m not actually good at them). Or I just need to buckle down with a knitting book and try again. I love home knitted items, which is why I really want to learn someday.

Diablo on the original Playstation was my addiction. When I was pregnant with my youngest I made it to nearly the very end and then my memory card got fried. I never touched it again, I was so pissed. We’ve been playing Diablo II on the computer lately. However! We picked up Diablo III for Xbox with some Christmas money and now if I can get the kids off it, hubs and I can start from the beginning. šŸ˜€ So, video games and home improvement projects are my non-bookish hobbies though reading takes up a considerable amount of my time. šŸ™‚

Diablo is one I haven’t played but now I’m definitely curious! The original Playstation had a few memory card issues for me too – I’m so glad we’ve moved beyond that storage system, though I do miss some of the games. They just rereleased Kingdom Hearts for Playstation 3 though, so that’s an exciting one for me!

    • Berls

Me too – and it only got better and more addicting! If you haven’t played the newer ones, it’s probably a good thing, though you’re missing out LOL

I absolutely love the Sims! I completely understand your gaming addictions because I’m just as bad!

I’ve been avoiding buying new games for the same reason. It would take over my life and I’d probably fail university. I did stupidly discover Sims Free play on my android and get sorta hooked on that. I’ve been avoiding opening the app lately because I don’t want to get hooked again.

OMG Every mention of the sims makes my withdrawls worse! Something about ruling over a kingdom of little people that you can kill in so many ways is so much fun (makes me sound like a crazy person but it is) I can’t wait to see what 4 is all about…I hope my family doesn’t miss me to much when it comes out lol
Gaming is pretty much my hobby besides reading and blogging.
This is a cute feature might have to check it out for next week.

I decided I needed to play a bit since real life has been so sucky lately. After I respond to comments today I’m getting on and wasting my afternoon playing! So far, I’m not seeing anything that makes me want to buy Sims 4 right away… but they haven’t said much either. thanks – so glad to be back šŸ™‚

I used to be really into PC gaming. I played Assassin’s Creed and Skyrim and all that but one day, I just stopped. However, I do still play The Sims 3! I’ve been playing the Sims since number one and I totally get why it’s so addicting. I can literally play it for the whole day haha.

Assassin’s Creed is another good one. Skyrim is a game I really want to play but haven’t had the time yet. I’ve been playing Sims since #1 too and somehow it just never gets old! I can play all day too!
