WIR | Unholy Ghosts (part 1)

October 10, 2013 While I'm Reading (WIR) 7

Every Thursday I bring you a chance to relive a favorite book with quick glimpses at my reactions and predictions While I’m Reading (WIR).

*** I’m trying a different format this week, so let me know if you like it or not (if you care one way or the other) ***

unholy ghosts

Title: Unholy Ghosts

Author: Stacia Kane

Narrator: Bhani Turpin

Get it on Amazon

I listened to Uholy Ghosts, so instead of page numbers for my reactions I have the time (as of the end of the quote). Within each spoiler are the quotes that resulted in the reactions below it. My reactions are copied from some of my bookmarks while reading (not all of them, because I go a little overboard). So if you just want reactions, don’t open the spoilers. But if you’ve read it and want to know exactly what part am I at, read them.

Chapters 1-12 of Unholy ghosts

Spoiler title

Yikes… well that’s an image to get me started on…

End of Chapter 1 thoughts: Interesting start, kind of confused. Loving the narrator already!

Spoiler title

Ok well that’s different. I like.

Spoiler title

oh shit. That’s bad.

Spoiler title

hmm not gonna argue that it was dumb move, but laughing out loud at her way of handling it.

Spoiler title

Tattoos – cool! Dulling senses with drugs when you’re going on the job… so stupid!

Spoiler title

Oh this is breaking my heart. Poor kid. And the narration is incredible.

Spoiler title

Damn Chess, best way to fix a high is to drugs to come down? *shakes head*

Poor Brain 🙁 He was so excited too!

End of Chapter 4 thoughts: I’m frustrated with Chess – thousands of dollars debt for drugs and going on the job loaded?

And this poor kid – breaking my heart. Is it possible that he’s a ghost… the innocent victim?

Spoiler title

Well what a creepy dictatorship that is! No thank you…

Spoiler title

Hmmm… does that have something to do with the airport?

Spoiler title

That’s an ominous question

Spoiler title

Yeah, you’ve been stupid. Maybe it’s all the drugs? That’s something you could do to change things – quit!

Spoiler title

Man, I would not have guessed that was Terrible. After the way he was with Brain, I didn’t expect him to be tender to anyone!

Spoiler title

Girl! You ain’t doing it right then!

End of Chapter 9 thoughts: So I’m creeped out by what’s going on with the ghosts – in a great way. I’m so incredibly frustrated with Chess and all the drugs. I just want to shake her! Terrible is starting to seem like quite the complex character… Is this what Terrible Fever is all about?

Spoiler title

I think I like Doyle. He seems well-intentioned.

Spoiler title

Eww! Nasty! Yuck!!!!

Spoiler title

Man this world is just so sad. Breaking my heart over and over.

End of Chapter 12 thoughts: I’m having a little trouble keeping everything straight. The slang is rough and the magical world is just so complex – but I think I like it. I’m curious about Doyle, he seems like a nice guy. And Terrible keeps unfolding these unexpected layers. Of course I’ve heard so much raving about him already, so I’m naturally curious.

Have your read Unholy Ghosts

What were your reactions?

I’ll be back next week with Chapters 13- 24!

I was lucky enough to listen to the audio version before reading the series. It really helped with the slang although it was hard to keep all the magic rules straight.

I love the narrator – I was still a little lost on some of the slang, but I don’t think I would have had a chance if it weren’t for Bahni Turpin’s narration. The magic is super complex – I think it’s going to make the series great, but it does make it a little harder to get a handle on at first.

I love your thoughts after each section. They remind me of my own at the same places. The audiobook format for this series is outstanding! The narrator handles the slang for you so you don’t ever get confused by it. I can still hear her version of Terrible in my head. Love, love, love this series.

I love Bahni Turpin – this was my first read with her narrating, but she’s definitely a favorite now. I’m not sure I could handle all the slang without her to decipher for me through her reading. I’m falling for the series now, but I had uncertain feelings at this point (I make this posts as I go – but I’m actually through book 2 now). I’m glad I stuck with it.
