Fun Questions | Do you get blogger ADD?

October 5, 2013 Fun Questions 19

Join me every Saturday as I ask a Fun Question that’s been on my mind. I’ll give you my take, but I really hope you’ll jump in with your answers too, since I’m really curious to know what my fellow readers and bloggers think! So today’s question is…

Do you get blogger ADD?

Being that I’m fairly new to blogging (it’ll be 3 months on the 7th!!), I often wonder about people’s process. Do they sit down to write posts and when they’re done with that answer comments, look at other people’s posts, etc? I wonder because I am all over the place when I sit down to blog. What’s even crazier about this is that I’m typically a very focused person. I sit down to do homework from 8:00 – 10:00 for example, and that’s all I do for those two hours. But not with blogging – I can stay focused on 1 task for anything! When I say “blogging” here’s what I mean:

  1. Writing posts.
  2. Working on my post calendar.
  3. Emails! (holy crap I get a TON of emails and they tend to involve me working on my calendar a lot, so 2 & 3 kind of go together)
  4. Responding to comments.
  5. Visiting people who’ve commented on my blog & commenting back.
  6. Reading my favorite blogs.
  7. Looking over the thousands of new posts from the hundreds of blogs I follow.
  8. Tweeting (sometimes this is just fun, sometimes this is blogging)
  9. Working on upcoming challenges, planning books to read, etc.
  10. Posting reviews in the standard places, which for me is: booklikes (which does goodreads for me), shelfari, Amazon, and when applicable NetGalley

So I’ll sit down, like I did today for example, with the plan to write up a couple posts. And in the middle I’ll need to link to something or say when something will be coming up, which has me looking at my calendar, and before I know it I have 12 different windows open. For example, check out my current window line up:

So… if you click through the interactive image links you’ll see that I was all over the place in the process of writing just this post. It gets even crazier when I’m trying to answer comments. I never seem to sit down and do just one task at a time when I’m blogging. And as a result, I’ll sit down to do one task and before I know it hours have passed and I’m still not done with it!

Do you get blogger ADD (like me)?

How do you stay focused while blogging?

5 years in (starting my 6th) and I can honestly say it depends on what is going on in my life. Example: I am about to start working on a huge work project (career) so my blog will become super scheduled (not my favorite way to go). I think it takes away some of the spontanity and often my content doesn’t fit my mood by the time it posts. That being said, it takes away alot of pressure.

Normal work schedule and I am a pantser. I will post on the day of, write reviews the night before, and just wing it. That is how I am probably 60% of the time.

    Is that ADD? LOL

LOL thanks Chene! Nope you’re not alone – I thought it might just be me too, but the results of this post have confirmed for me that it seems to be something a lot of us do! I sat down to answer comments 3 hours ago – got distracted and am just now actually getting to them… so I haven’t figured out how to stay focused yet!

Ha – you beat me, I don’t have the tv on! Sometimes I do have an audio book on in my headset while I blog… you knew when you have a post that really just requires putting things in their place, but not a whole lot of thinking. That happens rarely though – maybe I think too much?

OMG I can totally relate to this. I start out with a definite plan, but two hours later, I’ve got fifty open tabs and haven’t accomplished my initial goal! So the answer is…No. You are most definitely not alone in this.

And Thinglink is so cool. I haven’t played with it much, but I love how you used it here. Perfect!

I’m starting to feel better knowing that this is a majority problem. There’s just so many great blogs out there and I get so sucked in. I could spend all day just on blogs!! The Thinglink was fun – I remembered seeing it posted somewhere (obviously I could’t remember exactly where) and thinking that’s cool, but I don’t think I’d ever use it. LOL shows how much I know!

I do get distracted a lot when I’m doing blogggish things online. There are just too many cool things to read. I try to focus when writing a review specifically, otherwise I just let myself move around to many sites before I get tired and do something else.

I tend to make it through reviews okay, since I don’t usually need to look up much while I’m writing them. But it’s so easy to get distracted with all the cool stuff people are putting out. I think the biggest problem is that I need more time. Blogging could easily be a full time job, instead of the hobby I’m forced to make it.

I you crack me up, and I love that my site is involved in your ADD Blogging. While at times I can have a billion screens open, and flutter about the truth is I am very anal. So I tend to have a plan and stick with it. For example: In the am, tweet posts, do triberr uplifting, then write my review. Check tomorrow’s post, then email. After I visit my fav blogs, respond to comments, check facebook and twitter. It is here that I usually have a zillion windows open, as I reply to comments and open their blogs to comment back. Then I take a break for life chores. In the afternoon around 4pm I return and repeat it all again, and also check bloglovin and will open hundreds of windows, and then later that evening I do it all again. I will say that Sunday’s are the worse because someone will post about another article or blog post within their Sunday Post and of course I have to read it…then my screen looks a lot like yours!

LOL your site often gets me in trouble – you have too much good stuff going on! Gah even in this comment you have me browsing because I didn’t know what tiberr uplifting meant. After 15 minutes (yep 15 minutes on comment LOL) I still don’t get it. I read a parajunkee post about it, but it assumed I knew more about tiberr than I do. Have you done a tutorial on it? Do you have a tribe you belong to (if that question actually made sense…)?

Anyway I love that you have a system – I’ve been trying really hard to come up with one. Mornings tend to be too rushed for me with school and everything so it seems like I need to do all my blogging within a few hours every evening. Every time I try to keep up with it more than that I get behind with other things. So I just need a system for those few hours. I think my problem may be that there just isn’t actually enough time in those few hours for all the things I want to do :/ I need to quit school, find a way for this to make full time income, and then spend all day blogging (or reading). A girl can dream lol

Uplifting is where I share posts from my tribe. I have a tribe which is full, but you can get on waiting list, and I belong to another. We tweet each others post by approving them an then triberr sends them out randomly. It has a impact on visitors to my blog and has increased it’s exposure.

I definitely get blogger ADD. In fact, I was writing blog posts, but then I dropped that to write comments on blogs posts, but now I think I may check my blog email account. Oh look! There is something shiny over there.

LOL seems I’m not at all alone in this. There’s just so many great things to read and so much to do to take care of a blog that before I know it, I’m very sidetracked! Answering comments gets me in the most trouble, because I go to check out their blog and then I see a link and well the rest is history 🙂

  6. Vilia

I’m pretty much all over the place too and can happily spend hours tootling around different blogs without actually getting my own stuff sorted. When it comes to memes though I have a routine though – I respond on my site after I have visited the sites of people who left a message. That is the only way I can keep track of where I’m up to.

That’s a good idea – I tend to do the opposite and then I don’t remember if I’ve visited the person or not. I’ll have to try that. But I’m with you, I spend so much time tootling around and suddenly I’m like crap – I had a reason for logging on! Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  7. Bookworm Brandee

OMG! I was laughing hysterically through reading this, Berls. I am EXACTLY the same way!! Although I’m not as focused outside of blogging as you are…or maybe I am. I have 3 kids and I do focus *oh look, something shiny* long enough to make sure they’re clean, fed, have homework done, and where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be…usually. But I’m not sure that counts. LOL I swear I lose time. I sit down at the computer to do one, maybe two things and suddenly it’s 4 hours later! And I haven’t showered or had lunch…and now it’s time to pick up kids.

Seriously though, if you figure out a way to schedule out blogging and all that it entails, let me know! 🙂

Your comment had me LMAO – with 3 kids I think you’re 100% entitled to being a bit unfocused. I mean is it even possible not to be all over the place with 3 kiddos?

The computer can seriously suck me in though and it was bad enough before I started blogging… now, it’s insane how many things I have to do online! I could sit here 24/7 and still have things to do. If I ever figure it out I’ll be sure to send out an announcement, but I wouldn’t hold your breath!
